Re: horsepower tv

Yeh I saw it. They definitely dident research on here though, lol.
They went with the throttle body spacer, and the B&M shiftpack. They also used hedman headers, if they went on here they woulda got dynodons or the Hooker 2055s. And everyone on here woulda said the stock ignition was fine.
The intake looked pretty good though.

They did a one wheeled burn out too, which I thought was funny, hah hah.

But they had like 165whp and 260tq which I thought was pretty good for just the exhaust, ignition and shiftpack. Plus like 22.5mpg. Hopefully Ill remember to watch the 3rd part.

Lets hope they add POSI so they can at least do a proper burn out.

Re: horsepower tv

yea i noticed too that they didnt research here otherwise some tuning would have been done as well. or maybe they are waiting to do that on the third part. but yea they did get some good numbers off the dyno

edit: i meant custom tuning instead of the hypertech stuff

Re: horsepower tv

I watched the first 2 episodes and they say they have a $500 budget for each episode to upgrade the car. I'm quite surprised that they are getting those numbers out of that car without losing emissions capability and MPG. Makes me want to try some of that stuff myself, cheap and easy. And thats what a college student needs.

Re: horsepower tv

I recently did a trip from NY to florida in my car with full exhaust, intake hat with an K&N filter, injector spacer, free tbi mods, accel cap/rotor, msd wires, msd coil and tuning done by myself i got 22.5mpg with a fully loaded car, windows done. This was also with a busted egr valve, i figure with that actually functioning, i would have gotten some really good numbers. So the numbers are def believeable.

I was refering to the engine output numbers, now mpg on the other hand, I buy that whole heartedly. When I moved to IN in 05, we drove from MO to here and I did all 600 miles on about 20 gallons, so that works out to about 30 mpg (whole lot of 70mph highway driving). And everyone says a V8 is a gas guzzler

Re: horsepower tv

Maybe there is something to the ignition upgrades?
I had all stock with full exhaust and dual snorkler intake and I got 19mpg with mixed driving : ( I got like 220 miles for every 12-13 gallons I pumped in.
And my car was in excellent condition with only 40k miles on it.

Re: horsepower tv

I kind of disappointed with it so far. The test to show what a tune-up can was great and I like the cold air kit. But they just put a generic thermo chip it which is basically what everyone here would not due. It would have been cool to see an EBL installed and a wideband to really get into state of the art TBI technology. I guess by keeping all the valvetrain and such stock, the chip mods are worth the $.

I wish they did it with a manual. A lot of people with those are turning 25mpg highway.

Re: horsepower tv

How did they get away with skipping the water pump, by just getting a shorter belt? This was a full-serpentine setup, right?

Re: horsepower tv

But how is it routed? You can't run it direct to the engine pulley with only a 45 degree contact area or won't it slip then?

Go check out one of the hundred posts titled similar to "What MPG are you getting."

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...?highlight=mpg

My 305 t-56 3.42 combo netted 26 on the highway. There were others with t-5s that got 28.

Re: horsepower tv

My 92 was getting 22mpg with a 60/40 split of highway and city. That was an L03, MD8, and a 2.73 rear. The only mods were a Dynomax catback, and a tstraight pipe in place of the cat.

I was completly dissapointed with this episode. They wasted money so bad. Electric fan and pump, because it overheated?...how about a new temp switch in the head?!? The show only caters to the sponsors. How about the lame fuel system in these cars? If they really wanted to build the car, first mods would have been a Walbro 190 & AFPR!

True enough about the mpg, and to a certain extent on the A4 LO3. I'm a rare exception to the rule, when I get out an about on the highway for real long runs, I'll average 30mpg. My city driving averages 21mpg. Drives my friends with their econo cars insane. They think that because its a V8, that it should suck gas, but it don't. Makes it great for doing a little bit of everything, especially in front of the chicks

Re: horsepower tv

I got to see the last episode yesterday. What did you guys think of the final HP and torque gains??? I was really suprised they didn't modify the stock heads. They had them pulled off and put a Edelbrock TBI performer intake on. They could've at least did a quick port and polish on them considering all the other work they put into the engine.

Re: horsepower tv

I thought it was lame. They could have threw L31's on it, GMPP intake, upgraded the throttle body, and tuned it all. They weren't interested in making power. They were only concerned with blowing the sponsers and selling their parts.

i also thought that last episode sucked B@lls. ... they could have done so much more to that engine to get better numbers....but i guess it was a real small budget for that build.....lame either way

That was no small budget, and the money was wasted in all the wrong places.

Re: horsepower tv

It seems most build ups on third gens are just thrown together, not well planned out. Ive seen magazines spend 2000 bucks on a third gen, only to get about 30 horsepower gain. Cant say these shows and magazines are the most intelligent builders.

Re: horsepower tv

Thats if they even touch the engine. I bought a "Camaro Performance" magazine last year because they were doing a front end rebuild for handling with Hotchkis parts. I think they used a 88 IROC. So last month I grabbed another copy because while I was flipping through it I saw a few third gens and a story on an 83 Z28. Got home and found it was another Hotchkis front end rebuild.

What were the final mods added to the project? Keep in mind that HP TV is more concered about promoting sponsers than it is making HP. Hence the costly ignition upgrades.

The Edelbrock MPFI upgrade on the 93 C1500 was another example. They could have gotten that out of a hotter chip, the tune-up, and an edelbrock 3704.

They didnt use a shorter belt they used a electric water pump with a idler pulley mounted to it so the belt routing was the same.

What about cost? LS1 still need motor mount/k-member mods, $700+ headers, lots of wiring fun......

I know the LS1 is a bad asp motor, but for the weight saving to cost ratio, I like an aluminum headed sbc. Keep the same accessories, run TBI and get an EBL.

Back to the thread topic, they showed a couple cool tip and I think the cold air kit was trick, but 30 hp for all that.

I agree with whoever above regarding heads. How can you not put some street legal heads on and keep the bottom end alone. How could rebuild the bottom end and not touch the heads?

It was clearly all about the sponsors. Yeah, jet chips are the bomb man

Re: horsepower tv

About 6-8 years ago they had a old HorsePower TV show with a 91 firebird TBI automatic, they pretty much did the same mods, intake manifold, headers, exhaust, airfilter, hypertech chip, pully and a new tune up. They got something in the high 170's for RWHP, I'm not positive though. I have it taped on VHS, and it's up at my parents house in WI.
