Air temp sensor

Im looking to finally get my air temp sensor back into my intake track. I want to drill a small hole into my intake tube and put in a rubber grommet and put the air temp sensor in there. Since ours have that huge washer neck thing going on..can i run a tpi or an lt1 sensor? I wasnt sure if the tpi one grounds by threading it into the intake manifold or not. I know the lt1 1 is plastic which i would rather have but i wasnt sure if it was just plug and play.

Re: Air temp sensor

The MAT used in TPI setups is built like a CTS. Which makes them slow to respond. There is the birdcage style that responds quickly. It uses a threaded based (either 3/8" or 1/2" NPT, can't remember). There is a picture of it in this thread:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...ded-iat-q.html

It is the 3.1l '92 Camaro IAT.

The base does not need to be grounded. It is a 2 wire sensor with both wires on the connector.

Not having seen an LT1 sensor I would venture that it too has a 2-wire connector. If so then even the connector pigtail probably matches up.

Re: Air temp sensor

I am about to take my 3.5 inch ducting (not so cold air) to local welder and have an aluminum nut welded to it. Right now it is ty wrapped to radiator fan support. I believe it looks like .50 inch fine thread? I have not yet miked it.

the grommet is an interesting idea however. maybe I look for one hardware store.

Re: Air temp sensor

thanks Rbob..the lt1 sensor did in fact wind up working...thanks again

I wound up making a 5/8 hole and tried a grommet but it wasnt working too well. S i took two oil pan gaskets, the metal and rubber ones, and put one on each side of the sensor..sandwiching the intake wall in between.

The '92 3.1l birdcage style is an NPT thread. This is a tapered pipe thread. Could tap the aluminum nut for it after it has been welded on.
