Problem swaping 305 tbi to 350 tbi?
Hi guys,
Well this swap isnt for my 3rd gen but its for my truck lol, i didnt know where else to go for help lol. So yea I am trying to use the trucks 305 tbi system and make a carbed 350 into a tbi. The truck is a 1987 C10/R10. I talked to Brian from tbichips.com and he asked me to give him the 350s heads casting number. he told me the casting number was suppose to be in the bottom of the valve covers. When I checked under the valve covers i did not see any numbers. he said he cant tell me wat chip I can use for my truck so the tbi system could work fine on it. He needs the casting numbers. Does anyone know how i can get the casting numbers. Anyone.

SERIO
Take a photo of front of portion of your heads as viewed from radiator. You should see at least three threaded holes used for accessory mounts. Also, you should see casting features on the head's flange surface right next to the engine block. To see all this you may have to remove alternator or AC compressor. These casting features may indicate a family of heads that your heads belong to. Check this link for additional info:

There is also a chance that you may have after market heads.
Good luck

Re: Problem swaping 305 tbi to 350 tbi?
is the head clean inside the covers? if not and the heads are crusted with old nasty "tar-ish" oil they need to be cleaned up to see the casting# IIRC the numer is either between valves or by the exhuast port side of the head.
USUALLY a 3 didgit number. if it was carbed most likely u will have a 887 or 857? if the block was early 80's and honestly it as a garbage *** head prone to cracks.......trust me I turned in 2 sets off 887's for scrap due to cracks. hense why I went vortec on my car.
hope that helped you out

Hey bro i do got another question do u know how much it will be to get the heads cleanned up cause i can see that nasty tarish oil inside where the valves r at and where the coolant goes in also. is it expensive.

well I went to one of the "local" machine shop. but they do heads and builds. block work they send out and work on internals is also sent out.
when u do that make sure u get new valve seals done. in my opinion while the heads are off and getting that done might just as well up-grade the valve springs and have it cut to umbrella seals accross board. neither are much of an up-grade but it will help to support possible future add ons
