1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

Hello, I have an '83 Camaro with the Cross-Fire Set up. It ran ok with some minor problems until recently my friend was revving it up, not too much, but after that it idles realy low in park and when I go to rev it up a little it doesn't want to go over 3k RPM. Now i'm praying that it needs just a Tune Up. I know that the belts are badly worn, I'm in the process of changing the plugs, wires, PCV Valve, Belts, and fuel filter. Do you think this will help. It has always burned oil before this happend and blue smoke would appear when I realy got on the gas but now while trying to get the car to rev over 3K RPM it realy has alot of blue smoke. Do you think it's just some bad plugs? I accualy did the one side of the engine with new plugs and wires and started it it did the same thing not going over 3K RPM. Please Help. I'm realy worried and as i'm only 16 it's my first car and I realy don't have any money to put into it other than just basic stuff. I'm mechanically inclined so I understand alot about engines. And I don't want to sell this car either, I'm determined to fix the problem. And maybe do you just think its a bad fuel filter??

Hi

I am not sure why the RPM would be limited to 300 RPM. I also do not think you will see a lot of responses here. Most, but not all on this board have no use for the CFI engine and replace them as soon as they can. There are a few guys who still run their CFI engine.

Have you searched this board for CFI, Crossfire, etc. and read the various posts? It takes a while to read through all the result, but you can find quite a bit of good information.

You might want to check over on this board...

http://crossfireinjection.net

They are mostly Corvette guys, but they all have CFI engines in their cars. They might be able to give you some good tips and places to look and check.

Good Luck getting the engine to run correctly

Dave

Re: 1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

I have had my 83 crossfire for 25 years If you are not getting over 3000 rpm and blowing blue smoke it sounds like you may have 2 different problems First I would check the TPS it can go bad causing your rev problem without setting a code. The center wire is your signal wire on that sensor. Blue smoke could be anything from real simple to real bad. If you need any parts for your CFI I have 3 sets and have tried most everything with the system

Yeah. I brought my car into my school (i take up auto shop) and my teachers were saying that it runs way rich, and theres alot of soot in the exhaust pipe. We also discovered the timing is off. its supposed to be 6 degrees well its at 23. but we couldn't find out where the black and tan wires are at to reset the timing can you please help. and how do i fix the problem with it being rich?? Thanks

Re: 1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

Common problem first you need to find the light brown wire for the timing it is a single wire on the passanger side rear right behind the valve cover in the loom there is not much slack in that wire but it is a single connector. Then you need a monometer your shop teacher should know what that is If not it is a simple water level. Hook it up to the vac ports on the throttle bodies and balance the throttle bodies I think they are at 3" You may want to clean the IAC motors be careful of the gaskets. My concern is that you are at 23 deg of timming once you are in base timing you should see 6 deg if not you may have a worn or bad timing chain you can check that with a dwell meter at idle again your shop teacher should be able to help you with that
Hope this helps cause once you got them running right they run great Mine sits on a motor that is real close to 400 hp so dont believe all the bad stuff you hear about CFI Most people dont know and never took the time to figure out how to set them up
Anything else I can do to help let me know

Re: 1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

Thank You. I will talk to my shop teacher tomarrow and let him know about what you said. Yea we were looking around today for the wire but couldn't find it. Will this fix the problem with it being rich too?

I'm not sure about the FI cars but, I believe the carb cars did not have the single wire connector for the ECT. You would check base timing by disconnecting the 4 pin connector at the distributor. (How it was on my 84 anyway) hope this helps

On the Carb cars the 4 pin connector sets you in base timing aon the crossfire cars it is the brown single connector at the back passenger side of the motor

Re: 1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

I checked with some of my old stuff and found an old GM product service training publication #16009.02-18 If your school keeps any of the old GM stuff it may be worth looking for as it is exclusive to the 1982/1983 Fuel injection and Crossfire Injection Its 62 pages and I would be willing to try to fax it to you in sections. Also I was looking at an old Chiltions repair book that will give you the set up specs I told you about They also tell you how to do the set up with a Vac Gauge the Chiltons # is 8260 and should still be available. and not a bad referance sourse for your car
Let me know

Re: 1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

Well. The problem is fixed. It ended up being a clogged catalytic converter. I took it off clompletly revved straigt up to 6K RPM. so i looked inside it and it was completly torn up. everything was clogged, so i hallowed out the cat and put it on. Now it runs so much better. I can hear the flowmaster muffler on there now. Its realy loud. Thanks everybody for the help.

Hey Glad you got your car running You may want to check the o2 sensor for the rich problem though thats usualy what causes the cat to plug up
Good luck and if you still want the crossfire info let me know and I will copy it and send it to you

Re: 1983 Camaro CROSS-FIRE TBI F/I

I've been getting my CFI up and running for a while. Be sure to check ALL of the vaccum lines. In fact, if they look old, I would go ahead and replace them all. I chased several vacuum leaks before doing this and would have saved a lot of time if I had replaced the lines up front.
