If you already have the K&N for the stock set up, it would be better tu just grind the silencer ring away and keep it like that. There is also some sealing foam on the thermac door that you can scratch away.

If your really whant the open element you can find a 12" open element base and cover, so you can use your K&N.
DIY may be a good option too. Chineese open elements arent expensive eather.

Except if you live in a cold climate or you are not looking for performance, the open element is really rubish.
Your going to have to let the engine cool down all the time to get some cooler air, at that point the intake manifold is going to cool down too and thats going to hurt performance too.

Best is to get some sort of non restricting cold air intake.

Im running a 10x3" K&N tru a DIY cai and KPA readings show no difference vs the 14x3" flat base open element. I can WO the trottle all the time and get a sprint ready car every single time, this is not the case with the open element.

Check out the sticky above titled Common TBI Mods. It has a great Open Element FAQ in it which even has a link to step by step conversion with pics.

hey guys, thanks for all the info, one last dumb question, is there such a thing as a lid for the stock air induction that is made of air filter material, to replace the stock metal lid and let some air in from up top

I did a quick search on summit and it looks like them and K&N only offer 14"

Get this, K&N has a carbon fiber lid for only $265! I'm sure the weight savings will take you from 15s to mid 11s.
