Fuel Pump Question

I wasn't sure where to post this and thought I would try here. I have a 1992 25th with a 305 bored .30 over...everything else stock. I think that the fuel pump needs replaced. When it gets hot after driving the car for a while it begins to make a loud howling sound and I can smell fuel? Any suggestions? It also sets the lovely EGR code. Any help would be great.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It is TBI and the fuel pump is in the tank.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Sounds like to me bad pump and/or tank is not venting to well.....I've had similar problems in a couple of my Z's.....so when tank gets hot, the pump starts making a hum sound, and car runs poorly or dies all together (if not it will start)....that to me sounds like pump.....get a good name brand, don't get a cheapy or you'll be right back in same boat again...also change fuel filter (I do mine every other oil change). The smell of gas is the tank getting hot and vented gas fumes.....try running the tank with more fuel inside....don't go below half tank when hot ever if you can. There are other things you may try to, like putting heat shielding on bottom of tank, but up to you....have fun replacing pump....easy but long process. hope that helps some....

Re: Fuel Pump Question

Thanks, I appreciate that. Looks like fuel pump time yeah!!! Not a daily driver so I can take my time. I am contemplating an access hole in the rear hatch but have read alot of pro's/con's about it. Not throughly convinced that is the way to go? I'll get the fuel pump first and then decide. Thanks again.

Re: Fuel Pump Question

I have seen people hack everything up to save a little time changing pumps.....I would just do it right and not cut an access hole.....by the time you cut the hole and what not you could have changed out the pump without cutting your car....but that's just my opinion.....just get a GOOD pump, or you'll regret it.....

Re: Fuel Pump Question

I'm at the fuel-tank stage of the restoration, and have listened to
the pro's & con's of the access port idea. That went out the window
after I dropped the tank (for cleaning of tank, and undercarriage...)
and removed the fuel sender/pump assembly. On the formula, this
had 18" of pipe(s), in a large angle bend.

Bottom line -- an access port to remove this with the tank installed,
would have been most of the rear seat area. So check the length
of your outlet tubes, before heading down this rabbit hole.

Good luck.
