TBI questions. Please help

I just bought i 91 rs. it has had the "carb conversion" done a bit poorly i may add. Ok so my question is should i go back to the TBI everything seems to be there minus the TBI setup. i.e. vacume lines egr stock exhaust, smog stuff plugs and wires.

what gains are there to having the carb. i would think that it wouldnt matter until you were dealing with 300+hp?

the tbi would be more reliable wouldnt it?

Re: TBI questions. Please help

People say the tbi is more reliable. The advantage of having a carb is if you put performance things on the motor you won't have to tune with the tbi you would have to.

More often, the carb is used to fix a running issue with the TBI system that the PO was either too dumb or too lazy to troubleshoot

Re: TBI questions. Please help

thanks! i have been tinkering with the car the last few days trying to clean the carb set-up up. The car seems to run Fairly strong pulls to 100mph pretty smooth. It could be better.

I dont know how big of a can of worms id be opening trying to eliminate the carb.

How much should i expect to pay for a TBI setup (minus wires, ecm)

Re: TBI questions. Please help

The TBI intake is flat out awful. Dont bother with it, use a 4bbl carb intake with the TBI adapter plate. $40-50 from ebay or summit

Stock TBI unit is easy to find under $100. Im selling mine for $40

Youll need a small cap HEI dist, again pretty cheap and common. I can hook you up there too

Finally, you may need to put the EFI sender/pump back in the tank. Some people actually do the correct procedure for a carb swap and remove the old electric pump. Since yours hasnt even had the wires cut out, Id assume the pump is still there. Find out by bridging the fuel relay. Its the only relay near the booster with 5 wires going to it: Orn, Red, Gry, Dk Grn/Wht, Blk/Wht. Jumper the Orn and gry wires, the pump should come on. If it doesnt, either the pump is bad or missing and would need to be replaced to go back to TBI

Ok. so im parking the car in the garage for a few days to tear into it. (Pocket) Thanks great info. im going to try to bridge the pump first. then go from there.

just to clarify. You are saying to run the 4bbl carb intake that i currently have installed, get the TBI adapter plate for a 4bbl intake to bolt up to the stock TBI setup.. ?

Re: TBI questions. Please help

Thats correct

There are aftermarket 2bbl TBI intakes, but they flow marginally better than stock. Cost is significant too. Even crappy 4bbl carb intakes dust them

Regardless of performance, you've got a 4bbl intake already, why not go with it

Re: TBI questions. Please help

Well the update is i decided to keep the carb. I pulled the spacer plater to get the carb low enough for now to clear an air cleaner. Wow the amount of vacume leaks there were its amazing the car ran as well as it did. The kick down cable wasnt hooked to anything. I made a mount thats adjustable up top as well. The tranny feels better.

The car seems to run better overall, BUT sometimes its hard to start???? I dont understand why. I made sure to connect or plug the vacume leaks. I mounted the MR.GASKET. pump that they had floating around the engine bay.??? (should i relocate the pump to the rear? Im kind of wondering with mounting it on the fenderwell like i did it maybe having a problem with the climb going from the frame to the top of the fender well.?) ive noticed its louder but i think that is because i didnt rubber mount it.

O and alittle off topic ive got a "walk",shake in the front tires i jacked it up and there is about a 1/4in play in both front tires. That would be Struts.? Right? i didnt see anything loose i put a ratchet to the bolts.

Pocket how much for your tbi shipped to 92345 lytle creek ca.? Just so id know.

thanks again for the help new to this site 1st camero. Been part of many other car forums and the response on here is GREAT!

Re: TBI questions. Please help

Post on the carb forums about hard to start

Loose wheels can be a number of things
Generally is bad balljoints, upper mounts, or tie rod ends. Struts almost never have any side to side play unless they've been in a pretty nasty accident

PM sent about the TBI
