engine cuts off when stopped???

Hi, i have a question i cant find an answer to, please help.
im looking to buy a 92 camaro RS 25th anniversary ed., all good, needs some cosmetic repairs and such, but one thing has me worried. the engine cuts off. the car is, according to carfax, originally a TBI 305 V8, buut, the actual car has a TPI manifold, i suppose it has injection. so, the problem is the guy selling it say it runs smooth while moving, but i you stop, the engine usually will cut off. also while looking, i revved the engine at the intake manifold lightly, and the rpm's dropped, it sounded like it wanted to cut off, and i tried again and it died. uh oh. but earlier, the owner and i both revved the car smoothly. what could be the cause of this?? this is make or break for the sale. also, while starting the car, it must be kept at slightly higher than idle for around a minute or it will cut off. the owner says its probably a fuel line hole/leak or a leak in the fule injector seal. any ideas on the costs to repair/difficulty? what else could be wrong and the price to fix? anyone else have this problem? thanks for any help guys, i looking to own my first third gen camaro!!

Re: engine cuts off when stopped???

Since the car NOW is TPI - might get better answers in the TPI section.

Re: engine cuts off when stopped???

Don't buy it. Mine has been doing something similar after warm up for about year and everything I could think of has been replaced and three mechanics have not been able to find it. About a week ago I bought a Mustang and I haven't noticed the problem since ;-). If anyone ever really solves the idle issue and it doesn't cost a fortune I will look into it again but for now I will not drive a car that is going to embarass me at almost every light. I was going to junk the car but it's been in my family for 17 years and I would get disowned

Have you checked for a vacuum leak in the manifold? I think this may be the problem after relentless googling.

I changed the intake manifold gaskets about a month ago but no change, I also sprayed carb cleaner and ether in multiple location. but do you mean that possibly the manifold itself might be damaged somewhere that I can not see?

That's possible, but I have also found that the idle air control (IAC) can cause this if it's bad or something. Worth a look I guess? It's on the throttle

Re: engine cuts off when stopped???

IAC is a new borg warner, MAT sensor is new, TPS just tested but not adjustable, thought about making it adjustable but wasn't sure if that would be a bad idea. TB thoroughly cleaned, fuel pressure tested, new O2 sensor. Ignition control module new, pick up coil tested. Timing adjusted from 0 to 3 and then 6.
Next thought has been ECM but it will throw codes if anything is unplugged. I also get a EGR code after highway driving but I've replaced both solenoid and valve and also cleaned the carbon plugging it's ports while I had the intake manifold off, but the EGR code has been coming up for several years.
Acceleration is still awesome and puts many to shame, it's all about the idle. If I hold the pedal to 1000 or above it's perfect. I do appreciate any insight and I'm willing to check pretty much anything as I truly miss this car

Re: engine cuts off when stopped???

i had the same exact problem on my car(with TBI) i replaced all vac. lines and checked for leaks, changed every part imaginable and it turned out to be my ECM, stock ECM's are known to short, and if you buy the Cardone reman ECM they fix that problem, i haven't had my car cut off since

Hope it helps, that was the very last thing that could have been my problem, and turned out it was exactly that

really any of the swap parts could be missing, id make sure the ECM was even the correct one, it might be that the fuel tables are off in the prom? if they swapped the motor in and never swapped anything else, idk, ive never messed with TPI before only TBI and Carbs
