Vaccum leak, worn timing chain? or other issue?
Vaccum leak, worn timing chain? or other issue?
Hey all,
I currently have my 'bird sitting w/some of the cooling system components removed, and will be getting back to finishing up the work on that before too long, but there has also been another issue I still need to solve with the car that has me a bit puzzled. Here's what the car does..
- Starts, albeit somewhat slowly, but that is due to a battery that's getting a bit low, I'm told. When it's not cold out, a small little cloud shoots out the tailpipe, but doesn't do it constantly (bad valve stem seals is my guess)
- Seems to run normally when cold, but when it's at operating temperature, it idles a bit chuggishly/rough, occasionally misfiring.
- Revving it/applying throttle to about 3.5-4K will occasionally trigger the SES light, and there is a small, but noticable loss of power.
Here's what is new/fairly recently done on the car..
- Spark plugs
- Cap & Rotor
- EGR Valve
- PCV valve
- Timing adjusted
- All new cooling stuff going in soon (radiator, water pump, already did thermostat. And probably gonna go ahead and do the heater core while I'm at it).
I'm down to guessing it could be a vaccum issue, another emissions component, or maybe a timing chain that needs replacing, but I need more informed opinions

Maybe a MAP sensor problem?
Re: Vaccum leak, worn timing chain? or other issue?
I was suspicious of the IAC valve as well, but I suppose a MAF sensor could be the culprit too (still kind of learning this stuff, lol).
One other thing I forgot to mention was that the car was running rich when I got it, and it's running a bit better than it was, but I think it may still be a bit on the rich side. Is it possible that a bad catalytic converter or exhaust leak could be causing some of my issues too? (not rough idle, but the other stuff).
