Unless you know how (or are willing to learn how) to program your own chips, your kinda stuck. There's some mods you can do for small gains, but the chip is the real limiter. Stock chip will 'learn' a tad, and thus can adjust for a few slight mods, but there's a fine line, and once it's crossed your into chip programming land. Hard enough anymore to find someone that will program TPI chips, and no one ever messed with TBI chips much at all even in the day, now there's little options. And TBI system just doesnt have (from what I can tell) as easy programming possibilities (less parameters to change).
You can do exhaust (headers), the free TBI mods, an LT1 cam, and thats about it. You start changing to higher flowing intakes and better heads, then you've crossed the line. The computer sees all the new air going in, and only knows one thing, dump fuel on it, which makes it run rich and poorly.
Exhaust is not a waste of cash - it will swap to a 350. LT1 cam is cheap, and TBI mods are free.
To me, not worth it to "say" I have a 305. Nothing impressive about stating you have a 305. Given that there's no external difference between a 305 and a 350, you can swap in a 350, keep TBI, and no one will be able to tell the difference unless you tell them (except you'll have the extra horses).

it comes down to what are your goals? If you want a vehicle that will run with the 4th gens then yes. But, I believe you already knew that answer having read the hundreds of posts in this forum on the exact same subject.
And I also believe you meant the word was "unique"?
It's not that the 305 is a bad motor. It comes down to what you want. it can reliably power your vehicle for many trouble free miles if maintained properly.
You will read all the posts about using a 350 and that the 305 is a boat anchor. Well, you can't just go get any old junker 350 and expect performance either. There are many, and I mean many boat anchor 350's
The difference is, if you are going to change the heads, cam, intake and invest in machine work, that is when it makes sense to do it to the 350 because it has more displacement and you get more bang for your buck. Also, the 350 is the same size block so your accessories, mounts etc all simply bolt up.
Personally, I own a 4th gen and a 07 stang. If I want performance, both of those vehicles are there for me. I bought an 89 RS with a 305 that ran but had high miles so I rebuilt that engione. it made no sense to me to go find a junker block, hope it was good and rebuild that as my costs would go up.
I had a working base from where to start so the 305 got a stock rebuild (except being bored)

well building a 350 is the same cost as building a 305. So the only extra cost is purchasing an engine from a junkyard.

If you get a good running Truck motor like an L31replace the intake manifold modify your TBI with the ultimate mods located in a sticky also add bigger injectors, headers full exhaust, small 2600 stall,3.42gears,dual fans, custom burned chip. I am sure you will be content for a while..........til you want more!
then I would change the cam and convert to a stealthram or similar24-30lb. Injectors
of course you will mod the harness for this and install a walbro 340 pump etc. You get my drift.....
Make a plan of attack, buy everything you need and budget for more and get to work.

If i were to execute this, i would bare minimum at first with just l31 and puttin the 305 intake/tbi on it with the bigger injectors. I lookin at big difference in power?

L31 is a 350 with vortec heads, your LO3 intake manifold will not work.
The "budget tbi buildup" sticky explains every detail obout the L31 swap, if you are interested.

If you've never done a swap before, you better just skip it - few weeks is a minimum number at best. Nothing can be done overnight, or even in a weekend, unless you have air tools, lift, knowledgable friends, a garage to work in, etc. And even then you'd be doing really really well to even swap motors and get it started, let alone running well enough to daily drive (in a weekend).

Did ur car originally come with 2.73s? Feel a significant gain with the 3.42s

Re: Am I wasting my time and money if i build up my 305tbi?
So i don't have to repeat the same thing i've said over and over and over again, just go to my cardomain and read. Yes you can make a 305 plenty quick, but it really does depend on what your goals are. Can you get it in the 12's? yes you can but it most likely will be a pain in the butt to drive on the street and with the amount of cash needed for such a feat you can build a 350/LT1 or maybe even an LS based engine and get even more power. My car as it sits is in the high to mid 13 second territory but i've been tinkering on my car for over 8 years. Trust me, I really wish that I had gone with a bigger engine sooner with all the headaches I've gone through with this 305. Luckily for me it's all been a WONDERFUL learning experience and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
