Re: smog delete belt

Tech article states a 6 rib, 96.8 inch belt. I found no one making belts except in 1/2inch increments. Think I ended up using a 95.5 inch - you'll just need to but a 95, 95.5, 96, 96.5, 97 take them all home, use the best one, return the othjers (saves 15 trips to the store).

Re: smog delete belt

When i deleted mine,I used the same belt. You just have to route it differntly. There is several posts about it on here with a drawing of the routing. This was for a tpi serpitine setup if that matters.

Re: smog delete belt

Using the same belt can only be done if you use a delete pulley - which isn't needed, but without the delete pulley you need a different size belt.

Not true. I pulled off my pump and used the same belt. The belt is routed differnt than from factory. Not sure if it works for your tbi but it works for my tpi serpentine. search on tgo for the belt routing diagram. I have it but dont know how to post it on here. I was going to do the same as you and buy a differnt belt until i found the new routing.

Re: smog delete belt

Upon further review and researching i stand corrected. Although i didnt have to change belt sizes when i deleted my pump, others probably will. A longer belt had already been installed on my car allowing me to reuse my belt after pump removal. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: smog delete belt

Yes, the 96.8" Im sure you could use other sizes. Just has to be long enough. I personally am using a 98.0" and it works fine.

Re: smog delete belt

That's why I suggested buying several sizes and using the best and returning the rest - everyone's car is different, and everyone used a slightly different size.

Re: smog delete belt

From the viewpoint of an amateur engineer, I would say the life of those alternator's bearings are in jeopardy with that belt rounting.

doesnt seem too different than the factory routing when it comes to the alternator. factory routing is tensioner-alternator-power steering.

Re: smog delete belt

Look at the version that's tensioner-alt-WP, w/o PS, w/o air pump.

Re: smog delete belt

it covers 75 percent of the pulley. its still turning the same direction. you think thier is too much tension on it?

Re: smog delete belt

I don't know, but it sure looks like it has a lot of side load on it.

Re: smog delete belt

It doesent matter how much of the pulley the belt raps around. Because these cars have a automatic tensioner with a spring in it. That is what controls the side load on the bearing, the only thing your changing is the general direction the side load is pushing.

The only other way you could effect the load on the bearings is to use a shorter belt witch would make the spring in the tensioner get compressed tighter.
