TBI 305 to carb

I guess you could say im "old school" when it come to computer controlled engines. What im looking to do is swap my TBI 305 to a carb set up. I know i need a fuel pressure regulater, but what do i do to controll the electric fan?? Also, i want low end power, stop sign to stop sign, if you will. What type of cam and stall converter would achieve this?? What carb intake would match the sugessted cam and converter? I want a "throaty" idle with low end power, but hoping it will cruise nicely @ 70mph on the highway as well, but mostly stop sign to stop sign. If its not too much to ask, could you list the parts? Is a "summit racing" package the way to go? I'm also wondering about the TBI heads....do i really need to change those to achieve what im looking for??
Thanks in advance for the help!

Re: TBI 305 to carb

I wouldn't spend money on heads - in the end your going to want a 350, so use what you have until the time when you can swap for a 350.

Rear gears will help you alot, and stay in the car with a 350, so set your sights on posi rear with 3.42 gears - nice launch but more gas-friendly than 3.73 on the highway.

First, before anything, you need to determine if it's legal to swap to carb in your area, because not too many places will pass you on inspection.

If doing it, you need:

Carb
Intake
Vacuum advanced distributor
Mallory 4309 fuel pressure regulator

That's about $850 so far...

Then, if your car has automatic tranny, you need a method of locking your torque converter, and a TV cable geometry corrector for the carb you choose - another $120

I'd get the carb setup running, the worry about cam, heads etc. later if you choose to keep the 305 (trust me, 350 much better/more fun).

You want a 600-650cfm carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake is most popular, the Mallory 4309 regulator. Carb your choice.

Stall converter you want a 2400.

You'll use your existing fuel lines, and fuel pump.

I don't like "kits" - they always include something you can't use, thus wasted money. Get part numbers from Summit, then check with local autozone/advance for special ordering the parts - they ususally have cheaper prices, products arrive in 48 hrs, and free shipping - and no return hassles if you change your mind.

I have a non computer controlled non molested quadrajet 650 carb if you're interested, it'll keep your costs way dow, looking for 120 obo + shipping. Throw me a pm if you're interested.

Re: TBI 305 to carb

an airgap intake and air cleaner will most likely not fit under the stock hod unless you put a tiny air cleaner on it. my edelbrock performer intake and air cleaner with a 3 filter bairly fit.

the regulator is going to have to be a bypass model
a carb
an intake
air cleaner that will fit. most likely a drop base one.
hei dizzy---ebay
throttle bracket and/or adaptors--i used a jegs throttle bracket
a vacuum switch or toggle switch for converter lock up
remove s e s bulb from dash
4-7 psi on carb
bunch of fittings and hose.
an aftermarket efan controller-i used a flexalite and still do even though i went back to tbi
reroute the cooling lines to the intake
maybe plug wires if yours dont fit
tv cable adaptor for the carb.-then play with the cable adjustment to get it right
some extra jets, power valves and tuning stuff according to what carb

Re: TBI 305 to carb

Both the Performer RPM and the AirGap RPM will fit under a stock hood - they are the same sizes and I'm running a Performer RPM, so either will fit fine.

The drop base air cleaners are a PITA - they alway rub the dist wires and never seal well since you have to use a 1/2 inch spacer under them to clear the linkage. I use a 9 inch Spectre cleaner housiing that's not a drop base and I use a 2in filter, which ends up flowing more air than a 14x3 drop base since I get a full 2 inches of airflow compared to the 3/4inch allowed with the drop bases.

Re: TBI 305 to carb

I am not sure I'd go with an AirGap, if you live up north. Edelbrock says the Air Gap will not run correctly in temps. under 50 degrees. Go with the Performer RPM intake.
