charcoal canister lines

i have the diagram on my hood. but it is a crude diagram. i need to know if someone has a pic of their lines at the canister. i know some canister have three lines and some two. mine is a 1992 camaro rs. i know one from the tank line goes to the valve. then from the valve to the canister. and one from the canister. i believe that one line or maybe two have a tee in them. can some one take a pic of theirs for me.

Re: charcoal canister lines

tough question, mine only has two; from fuel live to can then can to my tbi. the one to the canister under the fender goes to a "vacuum check valve" that also connected to another vacuum hose from the manifold and another hard line into the wiring harness

Decent picture. The line with the disk shaped object and Y connection is the vent line from the gas tank (as you posted).

Right next to it, on the solenoid, that line goes to the throttle body. It is the purged fuel vapors back into the engine.

The largest line on the canister itself, that is the vent. The canister usually has 'vent' molded into it at that location. This is vented to air.

In the case of the picture that vent line goes to a T (can just be seen). Which then has an open hose going up, and another going down, to free air.

That is how it is set up on my '92.

Some cars don't have that vent hose. The plastic fitting on the canister is just open. Can't say whether any f-body's are that way, but have seen it done that way.

Re: charcoal canister lines

I have an 87 iroc and I can never find a charcoal canister like mine but I'm sure that one of the valves or the can is clogged because when you drive for more than an hour the car will actually start whistling from positive pressure in the gas tank. I blew air through the vent line from the tank and it was clear so I know it's not that. All the vacuum lines are brand new as well

Re: charcoal canister lines

Welcome to TGO. There are some variances over the years on the tank venting and CCP systems. With that said... At the fuel tank sender unit there is a small orifice in the vent line plus a rollover valve.

To check if they are clear send the air down the line from the vent line before it connects to the vapor control valve. That is the disc like thing with the three hoses connected to it.

Do this with the gas cap off.

There is another valve connected to the tank that is mounted above the rear axle. This vent normally provides for air to enter the tank as the fuel is consumed.

It will also vent excess pressure from the tank. This may be what is whistling.

Re: charcoal canister lines

I was able to blow air through both ways. Is it possible the canister or the disc thing(the valve) is clogged or stuck closed in some way that its not letting the vapors into the can and then into the throttle body? Also mine has some kind of sensor or solenoid on top that has two hoses and a two prong connector going to it. Could that cause problems?

Re: charcoal canister lines

So I got a replacement valve and when I had the old and new next to each other I blew air through them, or tried to, and the old one was stuck. Hoping this solves the problem. Ill let it run in the driveway tomorrow and see if it builds up pressure again. Also, my canister is the kind that has a valve on the left side of the can, a single hose port in the middle, and some kind of solenoid on the right which has a two prong plug and two vacuum line hook ups. Does anyone know how to test that solenoid? Thanks

Re: charcoal canister lines

The vapor control valve (the small round inline thing), should open at a little under 1 psi of pressure from the tank side. So can easily blow through it in that direction, but not at all from the canister side (it is a check valve).

The CCP solenoids come in both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) types. Which one is correct for your car, I have no idea.

A NO one is open with no power, with power it closes (easy enough to test).

A NC one is the opposite, no power, no air flow.

Re: charcoal canister lines

Some great info here thanks...my 91 Z28 is experiencing a fuel tank issue, it's popping more like a muffled explosion or implosion type of sound coming from the back while running and sometimes after shutdown...I'm thinking the tank is not venting properly and building up pressure. Anyone experience this?

Are you sure it is the tank? My Saturn does the same thing but it is the muffler not the fuel tank. It is pretty loud. If it is the tank the pitch of the sound should change between an almost empty tank and a full one.

Hmmm now you've got me thinking...I assumed it was tank system because this summer was getting the hissing sound (as mentioned above) near the canister....but when you mention muffler....I did hollow the cat out recently and started noticing the popping sound after that, not sure if that's have anything to do with it or not. I've hollowed cats before and never experienced that.

Re: charcoal canister lines

Hi guys, I know it's been a few years since this thread was started but I am hearing whining coming from the gas tank. I think it is a venting issue but not sure. I had a new fuel pump put in a few years ago and I've noticed along with this whining sound the car will begin to act like it is running out of gas, this typically happens when there is ~ 1/2 tank. The gauge is accurate. Any ideas? Is it a venting issue? I thought I smelled gas this last time this happened.

Re: charcoal canister lines

Take the gas cap off--or loosen it--and see if the whining and fuel-starvation problems go away.
