roots blower with tbi
roots blower with tbi
Want to drop a roots blower on an lo3/lo5. Bigger tbi/injectors, 2 bar map sensor and I have ebl.
As far as the mechanical portion of it. A roots blower for a carb should come with a blower manifold correct? Can I get one and a better set of heads that will bolt up to the lo3 block with no modifications?
Then using the carb/tbi adapter plate on top of the blower to mount the tbi right? Then id need to adjust the throttle linkage correct? Any ideas and input?

Re: roots blower with tbi
I run a weiand 142 blower on a 350 with an lt4 cam and a four barrel TBI. The injectors are 85lb/hr. It is running with an ebl and a 2bar map. Works really well. The hardest part is getting those big injectors to idle without being too rich. Trying it with a 2 barrel would be a real pain. I am not an expert tuner by any means but I can say after getting this one running I would not recommend a 2 barrel TBI. The blower is designed to run wet so it really doesn't know the difference between a carb and a TBI. A stock TBI unit would probably be too tall for most engine compartments.

What PSI are you going to run i can think of a few heads that will work...
Re: roots blower with tbi
Im most concerned with the mechanical aspect. If I use the weiand 142 will it bolt up to the factory heads? (Factory heads suck I know) and what other heads does it work with?
Also to mount the tb to the sc ill need a carb to tbi plate right?

you'd need a carb to tbi plate (no big deal). Im pretty sure they offer a blower manifold for the centerbolt heads, they deffinately offer one for the old school style. The head selctions are better for that style also. I'd change teh heads over to that style if it were me

The 142 blowers come with the lower intake manifold and are made to bolt to any small block chevy pre 1986 heads. You can use them on 86 and up if you drill the center bolt holes at an angle. Mine are the 86+ style iron L98 heads so I had to re-angle the bolt holes. Its not a big deal at all.
142 manifolds are also available now for vortec heads which are probably the best bang for the buck.
The 142 cant push enough air to make much over 500 hp so you really dont need a giant cam and fancy heads. The whole setup works great on a mild motor. I am running the small pulley good for about 8psi max.
It comes with a pulley that bolts onto the harmonic balancer. It positions the blower's pulley by itself in front of the regular acc pulleys.
To my knowledge Weiand does not offer a 142 for a factory serpentine belt setup. It is supposed to be run with the pre 86 style v belts. I had to machine a few things to keep the serpentine setup. It was not easy and I wouldn't recommend it if you don't have access to a machine shop.
I think gm performance is offering a serpentine setup that may work.
The EFI on mine is not a FASTefi setup but similar to it. Autonomics made that Throttle body and used to sell it as part of an Accel DFI kit. I think you can still get them.

You could use a factory throttle body with an adapter plate but it would be too tall for most hoods. The fuel lines out of the rear of the TBI unit might not clear the blower. Its pretty flat where it mounts and I think on a factory manifold it is up on a pedestal. I also doubt the airflow and fueling capabilities. I just don't see how it could be done with only a 2bbl.

I dont have access to a machine shop other then just taking my parts to one(doubt i can find one that will do the necessary machining anyway its not an average job). What are my options with the belt issue then? use the 142 with vortec heads but how would i fix the belt issue?

well they sell bracketry for running a v belt setup. I dont know if you'd have to buy a different alternator, water pump, ps pump etc...

Junk yard is the cheapest option. The junk yards are full of v8 cars from the 80s. You should be able to get all of the brackets and accessories from any rwd GM vehicle.
The biggest pain about going from serp to v-belt is probably the AC lines. The compressor is on the drivers side with the v-belts and pass side with serp.
The guy I got the blower from might still have a complete V-belt setup laying around. I could see if he wants to sell them.
Do some google searching for hot rod or car craft articles on the 142 with vortec heads. I could have sworn I saw one that listed the GM performance parts number for a serp kit that they used with this blower. Since they offer the blower for the vortec heads they probably make some sort of pulley setup as there was never v-belts on a vortec vehicle. You could always call wieand and ask them. I know the blower has been made in several different lengths. Some might clear a factory serpentine.
Bottom line is you could get all the v-belt accessories from the parts store and all the brackets from the junkyard way cheaper than buying a different serpentine setup. Especially if you are not using the AC.
Notice the blowers tensioner is right where the factory serpentine tensioner needs to bolt. If the blower nose was longer they would both clear no problem.
