Help. Revving Problem.

I started my car today and let it sit for a little. Its a 1990 Camaro 305. Then i started revving the engine and right when i start reving it the engine shakes bake and forth then stops shaking and revs normal. Then I let out the gas and when it gets back down to idle it boggs down a little then becomes regular idle. And it keeps doing the same thing each time I do it over and over. Also when i drive it. It cuts out when i push the gas and wants to stall. I replaced the fuel filter today and drove it and did the same thing. Just not as bad. Please help. Thanks!

How old are you ignition wires? Might I suggest a major tune? Once you've done that, you could use a scanner to look at MAP sensor and TPS data to look for anything out of whack. Also, check fuel pressure.

Re: Help. Revving Problem.

I bought the car in June. It has 45,000 miles on it. I'm not really sure how old everything is. How would i go about checking fuel pressure? What do i need and where do i check it? Thank you

Re: Help. Revving Problem.

Also i just took it for a drive and everything ran perfect like the day I bought it. But once i hit around 6 miles of driving it started cutting out and doesnt want to go. Then i stopped and left it in drive and waited and the car shakes and the engine bogs down while the battery meter jumps down when it bogs and then it stalled.

Checking fuel pressure on the TBI requires adapters that are found in a complete fuel injection pressure test set. Or, you can just visually check injector spray pattern for an indication of nozzle pressure. The "cone" spray should be round and solid. On throttle snap, the fuel should touch the sides of the throttle bore.

From your description, I'm looking more at ignition than fuel. You could still have an issue with the coolant temp sensor. But I would be looking at the ICM or pick up coil for a heat related failure. You can check the CTS with a DVOM. It should read about 3,400 ohms at 70 degrees, 180 ohms at 200 degrees. The ICM and pick up coil will be harder to test. Bench testing them cold won't really tell you anything since it's a heat related issue. My best advice would be to try a known good distributor if you know anyone who might have one you can borrow.

Otherwise you can try running the engine til the problem shows up and looking for a loss of max KV or any spark drop out. Also, check for a change in timing. If you're quick about it, you might catch a drop in resistance of the pick up coil. It should test between 800 and 1000 ohms. If it drops below 800 when hot, it's faulty.

Auto zone has a tbi fuel pressure tester, actron tester #c7817. Might beable to rent it too.
