idle problems

when my car idles cold it idles at like 1200 for a bit then it will go down and idle smooth between 600 and 900 depending on if in gear or park/nuetral. if i sit to long in traffic (dont know if its running warmer than normal because temp gauge is not hooked up) it will begin to idle around 500 and start to miss a bit and sometimes die if i cant start driving.

replaced my MAP sensor and my CTS, timing cant be to far out, im kinda stuck. any ideas?

Re: idle problems

The idle speed adjustment is normal when the car is cold and it's warming up. I'm not sure what the issue is with the missing and dying though...

Check fuel pressure, should be between 9-13PSI. Thats always a good starting point.

Re: idle problems

also how do i check fuel pressure, the only time ive ever had this problem was on a carb car and it just wanst pumping at all lol

Re: idle problems

you can check your fuel pressure on the the fuel line that runs into your throttle body, u gotta have a TBI adaptor, there is a thread on here somewhere with pics and everything.

For the TPS it is located on the side of your TBI, you can check to make sure its gettin the right voltage ( cant remember what it is), if you take it off dont spin the plastic wings on the inside, that thing is calibrated... you can bring it into a shop and ask em to check the calibration on it ( I would find out who has the capability before removal). If you bought one its gonna be about $25 and its pre calibrated.

If you dont wanna wast all kinds of money doing the "trial and error" method, id just bring it to a shop if you cant easly find the problem.
Good luck

Re: idle problems

i may have to resort to that, i just always find i do a better job than they do...lol...but i hate electrical anything, i realy only got this car because it was the only one running on craigslist, and it does get me where i need to be, just has small things wrong with it, all electrical.

i was thinking, had i had this speratic idle problem on one of my old cars (no sensors or electrical bullshit) i would kinda be leaning t'wards a bad timing chain (or belt on this, not sure??), like maybe as the car heats up the chain expands a little and allows my timing to get a little sloppy. if its only a little out at running temp that would explain why i dont notice the miss on the gas only at a low idle. but again, ive never even had a bad timing chain before or had to work on a car with one, so im not sure if this is a plausible symptom

Re: idle problems

I would start with running a OBD 1 scan on the ECU to see if there are any faults as a first step in trouble shooting any electrical.

Re: idle problems
