ran a 16.6, terrible?
I have a 92 bird convert, 305tbi, stock (exp k&n filter and flowmaster catback and mild built 700r4). Has around 250xxx miles. Is that up to par? Also had a serious issue getting the passenger rear tire to grip when mashed off the line. And tire was brand new. Any hope of 14s?

With street tires you didnt do a burnout did you? Ive always been told with street tires you barely wana spin em just to clean em off for your best chances to hook, or try some drag radials or swap in a limited slip in place of the open diff

16.6 sounds about right for an auto TBI with 2.73 gears.
You can probably make it into 14s start by looking at your rear end for some shorter gears, headers and other basic mods.

Yeah I didn't do a staging burnout, I just pulled up to the line. I went around the water box. I thought by puttin a new tire on the passenger rear id have hopes of grip but I didn't. That tire still just spun. That 16.6 was me rolling off the line and easing to the floor

that's def. right for your car, mine ran a 16.7 bone stock other than bumping the timing up 2* and lowering the tire pressure slightly

Start lowering the tire pressure in the right rear untill you can get some spin on the left side, then you can start lowering the left. It's all trial and error. Taking it easy on the throttle of the line to reduce tire spin can help your launch too. Even with posi, I ran a staggered tire pressure to make the car leave in a straight line.

Absolutely, I think I was at 25 psi for the pass side and 28 for the driver, but I could be wrong, it's been 4 years since my car has been to the track

as unfortunate as it sounds. that seems to be on par for the 305 tbi stock.

The L03 in stock form is a bulletproof engine with lots of torque but it's just slow.. I loved the L03 I used to have. Had to dump her for a 357 though, I needed a little more go. haha Still got the 305! Sitting on an engine stand in my shop!

Re: ran a 16.6, terrible?
Will take alot of bolt on mods and tuning to to make the 14s. At 250K im sure the compression isnt like it was causing power loss. I was running high 15s with the mods you have back in my old camaro, wasnt a convertible thought and I think yours is a bit heavier.

Re: ran a 16.6, terrible?
it doesnt take that much to get into the 14's...a gear swap is a big help, cam swap, headers, full exhaust basically about there...i know someone who ran a 15.1 with 5 speed all stock...

Re: ran a 16.6, terrible?
haha Nope, I plan on doing an underdog 305 build someday. Everyone rags on the 305 for being garbage but it does have potential. It just costs a little more to tap into it. haha Someday she will come to life again.... Someday....
