OPINIONS PLEASEEE

Im considering on driving my 92 bird on a 900 miles road trip. My question is, will it make it? Its got around 275xxx miles on it. Its got new plugs, oil change, center link, idler arm, fuel filter, tires and alignment. Tranny fluid looks pretty decent and so does the brake fluid. The calipers and pads are done within the past year. Opinions pleaseeeee

Re: OPINIONS PLEASEEE

Anything can break down. I'd check hoses & waterpump for leakage. I like to remove the ignition module & put fresh insulating grease under it.
If you have a break down, getting parts should not be a problem, but I like to bring some basic tools & a couple of parts (ign. coil, module, & fuel pump).

Not being a smart **** but- only one way to find out!

I agree with the others and try to at least avoid the stupid, easy stuff.
All my stuff is piles so I always bring tools if it is more than 100 miles, and I think a trip is the best way to enjoy our cars.

Re: OPINIONS PLEASEEE

I think its too much work to change your fuel pump on the side of the road unless you have the trunk cut out and a panel built for it. but I carry around a spare coil, spare ignition control module. heater valve. carry a couple gallon's of coolant/ or water with you. couple quarts of oil and tranny fluid, some brake fluid, ps fluid. that way if something springs up a leak (obviously a huge leak makes all these things moot) but if you get a small leak you'd be able to replenish the fluid until you got to a better spot to fix the problem...A mechanical part can fail at any time. Sometimes with warning and sometimes with not. But you cant live thinking that items are going to fail

I don't see why not. Map out all the guys who live on the way that have third gens, in case you brake down. If by chance you break down, you will have some help.
Sound like your car is prtty sound. Just a thought!

Re: OPINIONS PLEASEEE

I feel kinda dumb but where and what is the igniton control module and heater valve. And I know where the coil is, I've considered replacing it, its reall old. Just haven't looked much into how to replace it. I was gonna get a performance one though.

Re: OPINIONS PLEASEEE

more than likely your coil is not going to go out. If your coil is stock you'd need a tool to be able to cut the rivets on the stock coil bracket anyway...the ignition control module is in your distributor. and the heater valve is located on the top of the passenger valve covers it has heater hoses going to it. I am not saying to take this stuff with you but it is stuff i carry with me. But I also work on cars and know what and where the parts are located. For you I think just carry some extra fluids and if something else fails tow to a local shop for repair. Although if its been running good, you should believe it will keep running good. But mechanical/electrical parts can fail at any time without notice. I mean your water pump can go out, but I am not telling you to carry a spare one with you....Just enjoy the trip!

FWIW

Flew to, bought and drove my 100K mi 89 Formula 1000 mi DC to FL last summer (ie hot outside). Simplest for me was to buy a year of best AAA package with towing. That way at least I could get it to protected area if trans fell out or something. No way I could do hardly anything on the side of the road. Esp at night...

Highway miles are easy on the car so you have that going for you. Good on ya for the rad and water pump too.

I made it without incident but the battery died the next day.

Re: OPINIONS PLEASEEE

Has it given you any reason for concern lately? Check your battery connections and ALL your fluids, even your rear axle. Cracked hoses or serious leaks are areas of concern. I don't think I've ever seen a third gen with that high miles and no rebuild.
