when i start the car it runs fine but if i stop and shut it off and start it back up it cranks ill hear a pop itll try to start but it wont and if it does start and i get it down the road it bucks amd the rpms drop to 0 but the itll start back up with out cranking. i know the cars getting gas and spark im lost and need help figuring out whats wrong

 

IMO I would put a fuel gauge on it to check and see if the pump is working right. Have you changed your fuel filter.

 

i changed the fuel filter, rotor, the fuel pump is new also and the motors getting gas when it cranks

 

How about the fuel pressure regulator?

 

no didnt change that but it only happens after i drive for awhile

 

Try driving with the gas cap loosened up enough for air to get by.

 

it was loose when i put gas in it this morning and the car was acting up before i put gas in

 

Is the check engine light on?

 

no i dont get a check engine light when i acts up

Are you sure the timing is correct. I also had problems like this and it turned out to be the coil.

 

there should be no problem with the timing and how do i check the coil?

 

took the car out real quick shut it down sat for alittle while went to start it back up it cranked and didnt start till i had sprayed starter fluid into the throttle body and it started right up and ran with no problem

 

When you crank on the starter does the motor spin as fast as you think it should or is it a little slow.

sounds like timing to me.

 

The symptoms that you have described are probably related to intermittent reluctor coil in your dizzy or ICM. Very common for OE coil to develop corrosion and cause mysterious intermittent no start, stalling symptoms. Get a rebuilt dizzy or a newer spare one from JY and swap.

Yes sir Thanks for your in put. Read the book a little more and the symtoms he is having do point the the control module or the coil. I did mention the coil but forgot the test, IMO what you have suggested will more and likely fix him up. littlevin keep us posted.

 

Well the cars im the body shop till friday how do i check the imo and the coil

 

now if i try to start the car it just cranks and cranks so i sprayed starter fluid in and bam flames coming out of the throttle body my dad seems to think the motor might be getting flooded and thats why its doing that.. could it?

Its actualy doing it everytime i shut it down now itll crank but wont start n sometimes itll try to start but wont n when it trys its sputters n shuts down

 

I purchased a 89 iroc from my son in law and the car would run for 30 minutes and die..let it set for 20-30 minutes start back up and repeat again and again..When I got the car a new muffler was blown apart (backfire I guess). I went through 3 batteries trying to get it to start. Replaced the Ignition control module (auto zone can check it). Cranks up everytime. I let it run for an hour and idled fine. .Going to try on the road after I go through the brakes and other minor things. God Bless US All...John

 

Had the same type issue with my 89TBI.
What fixed it for me was replacing the Carter fuel pump with an AC Delco.

Still not fixed but ive.noticed that when it cranks it trys to start the motors'll catch but wont completely statt if i dont give it gas at certain time i so i dont know if thatll help because i cant seem to find out whats wrong
