Re: which TBI
I'm up in the air on the chip. I think I will give this guy local a chance. Now should I completly remove the emission stuff? It is cheaper to do but only by abbout 100 bucks. It would really clean up the engine compt. Can I delete the EGR too and the CAT? I still need the O2 sensor don't I? I just want to get all my ducks in a row. Or I could just use my stock exhaust manafolds and save over 500. How much would that cost me performance wise?

Re: which TBI
I always put headers on any performance car. they really do wake it up. but you can do as you want. You CAN get rid of EGR. You CAN get rid of cataltyic converter. And all emission stuff. but you do not have too. if you have fuel injection you have to have an oxygen sensor though

Yeah as long as he burns it out of the tune you can get rid of it.

Re: which TBI
Hey thanks I think I have a plan. Going to buy a fuel pump for a TPI off eBay. Then I'll get a TB from RV MOrris and injectors for a 350. An 18 pound FPR spring. Hooker headers and have my exhaust guy build the rest, and I think in 3". Open for sugestions on that. Get a air pump delete pulley. An EGR block off plate. Should I buy a performance distributer and coil after all mine have 164000 miles on them? Then get this local tuner to burn me a chip or two. Did I forget anything? Should I put a shift kit in my tranny? Doesn't that have to be programed in? I am not so confused anymore. You guys straightned me out. All the talk about different injectors in different pound ratings and adjustible FPR got me scared. I'm not building a race car just a mild street performance machine after all I allready have a race car I need a cool daily driver. It allready looks bad *** now I think it may back it up.

Re: which TBI
Id recomend a shift kit. trans go kits are popular. Or if you are having a transmission shop do it. ask them what they are comfortable with.
you dont really gain anything from an aftermarket performance distributor or coil on our cars. If you want to change them just to change them I guess that is okay.

Re: which TBI
I just can't be leave the response I'm getting. I read and reread this several times a day along with the thread about the 305 to 350 swap. Now what temp thermostat should I go with? My questions are getting fewer and fewer. I am almost ready to do the swap. I am just shopping for parts now. Making a list and finding the cheapest place. One last question what transmission do I have?

Re: which TBI
You have a 700r4 transmission if it is automatic.
Thermostat wise. You deffinately want to run at least a 180, if not the stock 195. If you run too cool. The engine's computer will run in an "open loop" state. Which basically has no computer control's. Therefore would waste fuel. You want the car running in "closed loop" when it is computer controlled.
I think I can speak for everybody when they say that they are happy to help with any questions you have. This is a very supportive website.

I read an the 305 to 350 thread part numbers for the ESC mod and Knock sensor and for my resurch it is for a 305. The other numbers that were there were from what I can find a 350. Here are the numbers and if you know if these are rite I will order them.
ESC mod-16126761 I get 305
16128261 This is the one I think is for a 350
Knock sensor-10456287 I get 305
10456288 I get 350 I think
They are both available from Amozon at a package price of $80.89.

Re: which TBI
Well I think I'll go with the TB from RV Moris and what do you think about a chip from TBI CHIPS? There's a guy on Craig's List the will burn one for me for 175 and he sounds good. If I delete the smog stuff he can program all that stuff in his chips. I don't know if tbichips does that. TBI Chips offers a package of the chip, fpr #18# spring and a fuel pump for 340. That seems a little hi to me.

Just when I thought I had it all figured out I ran across a new TBI unit off a 454. Is that to much? What will I have to do different? I still need a FP rite? Would the one for a TPI be enough?

I did the DIY route and saved a few $$$. Used it for a year or so on my 305 until the motor died. 305 has since been replaced with 383 and EBL has been awesome for tuning that motor too. And the few questions I've had, RBob has awesome to deal with... Last edited by Al Hasse; May 21, 2012 at 10:58 PM.

Re: which TBI
I know this is a long thread and everyone is getting sick of reading it. I have a couple more questions.
1)will a 454 stock TBI with #90 injectors work even though it has a 2" bore. I only have a 1&3/4 inch inlet.
2)I found a seller on eBay that will sell me a 46mm tb with an AFPR with spacer and 350 55# injectors for 400 delivered is that what I need?
3)which fuel pump do I want? EP241 or EP381 or a different one? I found them on eBay for 50 delivered.
4)there are a lot cheaper pumps out there but I don't want to do the job twice so what brand should I get?
5)should I invest in a FP gauge set up?
Thanks

2. If your engine really makes 330hp, I would skip the 55#/hr injectors.
3. I know the EP241 is a direct replacement and works great. You could try the EP381 and let us know if it is a direct fit replacement.
4. ACDelco
5. Yes, there is no way you can determine or set a desired pressure without a FP gauge.
Re: which TBI
1. you will need to bore manifold to 2.00 or buy a carb manifold with adapter plate. Or a HolleyProjection.
2. I would look to find one in JY used. Have you contacted JT(JP?)Trumpet on this site? I believe he sells rebuilt rebushed ones. I would source the rebuilt
injectors from fuelinjectorconnection
3. I wouild suggest a Delco 1985-1987 TPI pump
5. good idea

Re: which TBI
Well after countless hours of resurch and this thread with all the help from my brothers I have a TBI on order.
It's a 46mm body. It has 55# injectors. It has a injector spacer. It also has an AFPR with gauge package. I also have on order an EP381 A/C Delco FP. I hope I did allrite I spent just over $500 large. I built a 750 Holley for my hot rod for half the money. But I do love my vert. I am slowly gathering all the parts fort the swap. I do have one question though. Can I get away with swapping out the FP now. I have some time before I am actually making the engine swap but I do have some days off coming off with nothing to do.

Re: which TBI
I have the motor tuned with EBL Flash and and still need to do some work on WOT as the AFR dips into the 10:1 range for a moment before leveling out at about 12:1, but I still get nearly 18mpg highway.

Re: which TBI
Should I get 62# injectors? How about 80#'s? Now there's a guy on the form that has one that has been bored to 2" and will include 55 and 80# injectors. The one I am or was going to have build me one can upgrade to 62#er's for 20 more.
The new one will cost; $540 but that includes a;
46mm TB,
62# injectors,
Injector spacer,
correct linkage,
AFPR from 10 to 20#'s
gauge set up,
base gasket,
TPS and IAS
Basically a complete TBI
But now I've found this;
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...ec-intake.html
More questions in but it sounds good. I have one more question though. Will I have to bore my intake to 2" to take a 2" TB? or at least get an adapter if there is such an animal. So I ask for help and advice again. Spend $540 and get exactly what I want or $250 (or less) and have one to work on? I am in no hurry.

Re: which TBI
I have found a lot of success with 46mm units running 5235206 injectors at 22psi. This will nicely support up to 350HP with the right chip tune.
I have done about 2 dozen of these exact builds in the past 6 months. All with great success. I have found that the 80-90lb injectors can be too much at times for 330hp builds and less.

That is part of my quandry. People said I underrated my engine. I guess it is feasible to get 350+ HP out of a 355 with 60859 edelbrock heads and a small cam. I will run the 80# if they are too much then I guess I will go smaller! haha.

Thanks for the advice. I am going with 62# injectors and will start at 22#'s and tune from there. But I have more questions if you can believe that. What is this number 5235206? Is that the part number? Are those 62# injectors? Who are you using for the chip tune? Sorry for asking the same stupid questions over and over again I just want to get it rite. I am getting so excited about the swap. The FP isn't going to be fun. If anyone can give me the rundown on the steps and what has to be removed that will make the job that much easier. Can I put the pump in now before I do the swap I have some off time coming up and I could get that out of the way.

DIY tuning with EBL flash.
To change the fuel pump, empty the fuel tank, lower the rear axle, remove cat back, remove heat shields, remove the fuel tank straps, remove the fuel lines, drop the tank and change the pump.

Re: which TBI
Well changing the fp seems straight forward. Do you have to disconnect any of the brakes? I am planning on buying my tpi from this guy off ebay. I'm getting a package deal. The 46 mm tbi 62# inj inj spacer fuel pressure gauge and afpr and a fuel pump. But the fuel pump has me worried. He says it is made by the same people that make wal something and it is american made and puts out 225 lph at 20 pounds but he says it's good to 40 and its ten bucks more then the delco pump. He is giving me a package deal oc 540 shipped. But after reading that last pozt it hes me thinking about 80# injectors. I'm so confused. There's a guy on here that wants to sell me an intake and complete bb tbi with a parts tbi for 350 shipped. I ask everyone again what should I do? I have 2 weeks to make up my mind then I plan on buying. Any advice would help

I would go with one of the ACDelco pumps already mentioned and discussed, rather than the Walbro.

Well I am one step closer. I bought an AC Delco EP381.
No one said but can I install it before I do the swap?
Will my stock TBI handle it and not mess anything up?
Or should I wait to install it?
I changed my mind yet again. Now I plan on getting my TBI from;
Sean @ SPR Performance, LLC/TBIPARTS
I hope he's cool. I talked to him for a long time and he seemed very knowledgeable and he recommend getting a chip from TBICHIPS they work hand in hand to have everything work together. How difficult can it be to get the chip rite? I hear about the EBL but I really think that's to much for me. All I am going to do is drive this car. I will very rarely even floor it.
No one said but can I install it before I do the swap?
Will my stock TBI handle it and not mess anything up?
Or should I wait to install it?

Good choice to support dctrumpet.
EBL flash is not too much for your engine, it is minimum requirement if you whant to give life to those 330 hp it has in it.
Not shure you realize, but you will be pulling away from factory LS1 cars, but you need to update that no good, slow factory TBI ECM and forget about the chips.

Re: which TBI
I already bought them from amazon.
Part #.
ESC................16128261
Knock sensor....ACDelco GM#10456288 ACD#213-324..............................$81 together
I hope these are rite.
I also bought a TransGo Reprogramming kit 700-2&3................................$84 off eBay from Summit
and an ACDelco FP part # EP-381 for...................................................$42.50 off eBay
I also am buying a 43mm TBI from SPR..................................................$449 complete
Shorty SS headers.............................................................................$129 off eBay
Stuff I still need to buy
2&1/2 or 3" not sure yet High Flow Cat.................................................$79 off eBay
"Y" pipe made by my local exhaust shop................................................$120
new 2&1/2 or 3" pipe not sure yet made by my shop too..........................$??.??
Performance muffler by my local shop...................................................$??.??
All included shipping
Then I have a tuner here that will burn a chip for me me..........................$175
Sean suggests Brian @ TBICHIPS.........................................................$240
I may go with him instead. Of coarse there is always the EBL Flash system.$450
But I'm scared of that.
Is there anything I am missing? I would appreciate some input from you all. It is costing me an arm and a leg to get this thing in my car. But I tell you my car is beautiful. I am also going to refresh the tranny when I put the kit in.
Or there is always sell the car and engine and lick my wounds. That would be the smart thing to do. But... If there is anything I can't be called is skart when it comes to my cars.

I agree about EBL. Best investment I've made to my motor. I bought it for the 305 that used to be in the car, and now does very well for the 383 I have now. I have the Vortec heads and intake, injectors p/n 5235206 with pressure set at 18psi. Since I bought the motor assembled and haven't been able to get a build sheet, I can only assume the internals are all stock 350, except for the crank, rods and pistons, so I set my initial tune to that. I also have a wide-band O2 input to EBL, a must to get your tune right for WOT. With what I have and how it's tuned, I dynoed at the rear wheels 248hp and 348lb/ft, I'm happy with that but I feel there is some more to be had.

Re: which TBI
So is the EBL system basic? Can I install it and start up my car for the first time and go from there? I'm just not sure if I need something that fancy. All I want is to put a chip in and forget about it. So does the EBL system set the car up and that's it or do I need to keep tweaking it? You all say it's worth the money but it appears to be $450 and a chip is only $175 but I am so confused. I am not cutting any corners with this install and I would hate to not do it rite to save a couple bucks. If you could tell me your experiances with your chip that made you go to the EBL and just exactly why you like it so much to make it worth the extra money. Can I program the EBL for no smog pump and no EGR?
It's getting close to the install I am just getting all my ducks in a row I don't want to many suprizes. I know I can't get it all but with your help I am going to get most. If I am forgetting anything or I can do it better like the EBL I am relying on you to set me straight.

Re: which TBI
I have one more question for now. My intake measures 44mm and my new TBI is 46mm I was wondering how important it is to bore my intake out the 2mm, it seems a little un needed. But... Sean say it is a must.

Re: which TBI
I would say its a must if you want to open the throttle. The bores have to be able to let yor TBI throttle plates move inside them.

Now how many chips is your tuner going to modify and burn for that money? 1-2-3-20-40-50 ?
The EBL comes with many calibrations for many applications, choose the closest to your engine, set up the basic fueling #'s to mach the injectors and fuel pressure (with our help), start it up, after operating themperature is reached do 4-6 VE learns.
Basically you did nothing and it will probably run better than with the coustom chip.
EBL is not set up to control the AIR (pump) system and EGR can easily be disabled if must be.
Learning, test and trial are involved in the tuning process, final decision is yours, if you want to do it or not.
Bore or grind the intake bores to a minimum of 47 mm.

Re: which TBI
you could run a spacer with the bigger bores but then you have the block at the intake thats gonna disrupt airflow so just bore the intake or do like i'm doing an buy a aluminum intake an put a adapater on it with the right size holes in it .
Re: which TBI
Consider stepping up to a Holley Projection TBI manifold. Has proper sizing. Check classifieds here or ebay. Might save you $$ besides. I presume you have a stock intake?

Re: which TBI
Tell me the pros and cons of each the EBL and burning chips. I am on the fence and need a little nudge. Could I put it in before I get the new engine installed and play with it?
So it sounds to me that everyone agrees with Sean about boring my intake to 46mm. I really don't see that it matters. The throttle blades should clear. But I will run a honing tool and get the extra 2mm out of it.
