broken oil pressure sending unit
broken oil pressure sending unit
First post, and not sure if this is the right place to post this. I have a 92 305 tbi 5 speed, and when changing the spark plugs the other day, I knocked into the oil pressure sending unit and the plastic housing crunched. When I touched it, the plastic housing was very loose and wiggling. I started the car up after finishing with the spark plugs, and noticed the oil pressure was at the red line. Because the oil pressure was perfectly fine earlier before changing the plugs, I figured it was safe to take a test drive to the store to get a replacement OPSU. Car drove beautifully, not rough, no sounds or signs of low oil pressure, but the needle stayed below the red line during the whole 20 minute drive, and would still move a little under acceleration. I tried to replace the OPSU, but I can't get enough clearance to fit the socket on, and don't have a wrench that would fit. I need to make a 400 mile drive tomorrow, can't delay any more, and have no other means of transportation. Do you think the car is safe to drive? Would the engine have seized already if it was running for that long, and the oil pressure was that low? Does anyone have any recommendations for removing the OPSU, or know what that hard plastic line is that seems to go from brake booster area towards the bell housing is?

id deffinately change it. Those can actually leak oil...you sure your's is not leaking at all?
They sell special oil sender sockets you can probably pick one up at your local auto parts store.

It's not leaking. INside the plastic housing, a spring under a metal plate was unseated, so I'm hoping that's why it was reading low pressure. I have the socket, but I can't fit it in, because there's a hard plastic line going from the brake booster area to the transmission area. Before the plastic housing broke off, it was flush against this hard plastic line. Is this a feed for hydraulic clutch? I want to disconnect it, but I don't have time to bleed the system.
Edit to add: None of the auto parts or hardware stores in my area have a wrench that will fit on the OPSU, and only one socket at any of the stores.

If it is the clutch line I have no idea. Never worked on a clutch third gen. shouldnt be that hard to change. I guess if it isnt leaking it will be fine.
