Rough idle, dies when put in gear

Hi guys, I have an auto 305 tbi 90 Camaro. I got it, it my first third, and it died not a month later. I recently got the fuel pump changed out after it sitting up for a few months. I managed to drive it home, but it died twice on the way there. Now here's what it's doing: it cranks fine if I give it throttle, but I have to keep it applied the whole time or it'll die quick. If I put it in drive or reverse, it'll die immediately if not given throttle. It's also blowing a lot of smoke out of the exhaust, when it's cold or warm.

I've replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, it had proper oil, and I tested the alternator and it was fine. I was thinking fuel injectors and was wondering if anyone had a similar experience or had knowledge on this?

I had this exact problem last month. At traffic lights I had to shift into neutral to keep it revving. Distributor was replaced, and all is well now.

I had the same problem.
Remove and check/clean the idle air control valves with a quality mass airflow sensor cleaner spray. Make sure to scrape all the junk from the pintle valve.

I had the same issue and for me it was coolant temp sensor and timing was off.

My 90 camaro starts up, idles great for about 3 minutes and then gets really rough, shakes like its missing.

Getting ready to do egr valve, iac replacement, hoping this will help.

Sounds almost the same as what you are getting. I have heard the CTS contributes alot to this condition also. May do that as well ...

I went crazy trying to track down what was doing it. I replaced egr and iac both. Checked my injectors, fuel pump, fuel filter, everything. When the cts was changed it made a large difference, but was still surging some. The timing on top of cts cleared it all up. I was lucky enough to have Chevy8588 check it with me because I was pulling my hair out. He knew what it was right away and made me feel dumb! lol

Plus, if you are changing stuff you might as well swap it out also. I went with the "expensive" one and it was only $17. Cheap and worth it.

$17 ... thats a no brainer.
Tearing off the TPI plenum as soon as the heat wave passes, too dam hot to work on it now.

There's a dozen things that could be wrong. Connect a scan tool, read the data stream.

When this was me, it was the pickup coil in the distributor.
