I have a 1991 305 tbi 5-speed, i was wondering, whats a good hci swap for about 260 hp? would vortec heads, exhaust, holley tbi intake and throttle body, bigger injectors, a good tune and a bigger cam get me there?

Um.. I'm not exactly sure here, but why are you aiming so low? You can make mid 200's as you're asking without swapping the stock heads. There are several all-motor 305 builds that have led too 350+ HP with a similiar setup.

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
biggest heads you can go with are 64cc from what i read, cam would be something like a 230s duration and intake i have no clue
if you can look for the members: robertfrank, mw66nova (i think thats his name) and street lethal, those are the guys that have or had the fastest 305s on the board.

swap to a 350, put heads on that. more hp and similar fuel mileage. you'll be happier in long run.

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
What do you mean getting his hopes up? There was a 423 FWHP 305 built from a man off this forum. It's all in the right combo choices, I followed too the T what Nova66 told me and when I dynoed my 305 TBI (Converted to carb w/ Edlebrock 600 CFM) I got 328 HP out of it using l98 vette heads.
The days of the 305 being hated because of small displacement are over, build the 305 that's in the car if you want.. turn it into a 300-350 HP street engine, throw 125 shot at it and ride out.

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
Undercover, how do you figure? I spent less than 1,500$ on my build because I did all the work myself, and turned the 170 HP slug into a 328 HP street car, and I'm looking into N20 as we speak.
Say I had gone 350.. In my area a decent 350 block is around 200$, at the local scrap yard any block is 199.99$, and full assemblys are 400$. So let's say I bought the fully assembled 350, say a TPI 350 (Too give you the benefit of the doubt) for 400$, brought it home and said I was going to put it in my car. Well heres the thing, I have a lot of tools.. but don't have the means to take an engine out and put another one in. So I take it to a local automotive shop, 500$ to remove and install new engine, no other work added. We're now at 900$, and I have the bone stock TPI 350 sitting in my car, making 245 HP. 600$ left, will I reach 328 HP? Not a chance.
Things that are feasible for some people are not feasible for others.. For me it was feasible to build the very low mile original 305 in my car, and I got a pretty nice return out of it. When all said and done, and my 330$ (after shipping) N20 package arrives, I'll have a car that peaks over 400 HP @ the crank, for less than 2,000$.. And I never had to pull the motor.
So the cost thing is out the window, to mention.. it's a small block chevy, parts are everywhere.

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
-------> speed pro flat top pistons .030 over , balanced bottom end , HV oil pump , windage tray, comp short travel HR lifters , trick flow super 23 175 heads (for 305), Howard's HR cam .488/.495 268/270 114lsa, +1.6rr, summit dual plane , CFM tech 620cfm TB, aero motive VRFPR, custom 3" CAI , shorty headers , custom 2.5" y pipe into full 3" exhaust w/dump @ axle ...... I think I'll be somewhere around 325-350hp @ 5900-6100 rpm & 360-390 ft lbs @ 3500-4000....... And i get to say "it's just a TBI 305" when someone is weary about what I got under the hood before they slap a 100$ bill on the table

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
Id go with the trick flows man ... By the time u buy vortecs then get them machined for a bigger cam then milled for correct Cc's then buy a 300$ vortec intake ur gonna end up spending just as much as the trick flows and not have all the benefits of a HP aftermarket aluminum head .. Plus all u gotta do is take em out the box and bolt em on .. Look up trick flow super 23 175cc heads .. And they have a 56cc chamber which would give u a slight bump in compression over the 58cc stockers !

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
whats a good cam? to go with them heads and intake.
Re: H/C/I TBI 305
Depends on what you want for TQ(drivability), what RPM you want to shift at, your tranny and stall, gears etc. AND whether you plan on learning to tune. cam and heads will require considerable tuning.
EFI likes 113-114 LSA. If you are into tuning a 112 is good.

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
look up ROBERTFRANK and FAST355 and read about their mods. that would be best for you to do in mods to the tbi. both of them are very successful.

Re: H/C/I TBI 305
Cost will be about the same as building/upgrading the LO3, serious fueling and tuning will be required on both set ups.
