TBI tuning questions.
TBI tuning questions.
I hope you guys don't mind a guy who doesn't have a Camaro/Firebird asking some questions about TBI tuning. I have a 1989 Chevy 4x4 2500 TBI 350. I am thinking about doing some hop ups, and tuning, and I apologize if these are questions that are always asked.
What things do I need to buy to start tuning my 350?
Is there a difference between prom tuning, and chip burning?
Does DIY tuning require knowing how to solder(if so I'm screwed)?
Are chips rewriteable after a tune, or do I need to keep buying chips in case I screw up(adding cost)?
I saw a dynamicefi thingamagig that made it all seem simple, but it seemed like I could only use it for one vehicle(and pricey too). Can someone tell me what that dynamicefi thing is for?
Thanks in advance guys.

Re: TBI tuning questions.
No difference between PROM tuning and chip burning. They are one in the same. Save your original PROM. Don't try to reuse it. It is an EPROM, which is erased by UV light, hence the sticker over the window on top of the chip. Purchase an EEPROM that is equivalent, electrically erasable, not UV. You can rewrite the EEPROM just about as many times as you like; they do have a rewrite limit, but you won't get there. For PROM swaps, you won't need to learn how to solder. Anyone can solder with a good Weller soldering station. The Dynamic EFI system is a board that gets installed into the ECM in place of the PROM. Instead of PROM swapping for tuning, you can reflash the ECM via computer. Much easier. RBob offers great support and frequents this board. It's a little pricey, but you are paying for convenience and support.
If you choose the EEPROM method and chip burning, check out Moates.net. They have new chips, and chip burniners. You will also want to look into TunerPro RT for doing your chip reading, writing and manipulating. You will also want to buy an ALDL cable or Bluetooth adapter to datalog your vehicle to determine what changes need to be made.
Lastly, do lots of research. Tuning isn't an easy task! Good luck!
