WTF, 20:1 on the WBO2 gauge and exhaust so rich your eyes tear.

Can anyone explain this?
How can the WBO2 be reading so lean and the exhaust be so rich that its irritating my eyes. Before anyone asks, the WBO2 is new and it was calibrated before the test was ran.

New motor
No Cat
New plugs FR5LS
New wires
New distributor
New coil
New Denzo NB02

I had a similar problem, but on my TPI car. WBO2 installed in rt side, factory O2 in left. Datalog was perfect, WB showed lean all the time. I added a bung to install the WB in the left and it showed perfect. Found a clogged injector on rt bank. 3 spark plugs looked good, 1 had no sign of burn, no fuel.

I'm running a TBI system, that fix isn't an option for me.

I have the whistle at idle so I'm sending the bottom half in fr bushings. We will see in a week if that fixes it.

That's easy. The USUAL (but not only) cause of "exhaust so rich my eyes burn" is "misfire" including "LEAN MISFIRE".

The mixture can be so lean that it won't burn, but whatever fuel is in the mix goes out the tailpipe.

An ordinary "rich" mixture produces a lot of carbon monoxide. CO is colorless and odorless. It doesn't make your eyes water. It just puts you to sleep...and kills you.

No catalyst = no post-combustion chamber reduction of hydrocarbon.

Re: WTF, 20:1 on the WBO2 gauge and exhaust so rich your eyes tear.

Shurkey, I'm going to guess that screwing with my Fuel pressure is not the correct step. And I'm afraid to run it to do VE learns. Should I just increase my VE manually? Is this the dreaded long runner in the airgap intake that is causing this headache?

I noticed something that might verify my Throttle body leak hypothesis. In my datalog my VAC column is reading between 45-53 at 800-900 RPM. That doesn't seem right, it should be higher right?

Sorry. Can't help with that. Adjusting VE? No idea.

Vacuum between 45--53? 45 WHAT? Cubits? Millibars? Volts? I have no idea what units you're referencing. I'd expect vacuum to be reported in inches of mercury. That gives me a number that's probably between 10 and 20, and not over 30.

I would be looking for sources of misfire. Defective plugs, plug wires mis-routed, weak ignition. Use an unlit propane torch to enrich the fuel mix, perhaps. Consider a cylinder-balance test to see which cylinders aren't running.

The whistle is most likely the base gasket is dried out. This is common. It is the gasket between the TBI unit and intake manifold adapter.

As for the VAC reading in the log, it is in KPa. The ECM subtracts the current manifold pressure (MAP) from the stored barometric value. The result is vacuum in KPa.

RBob.

RBob the gasket at the base is brand new, everything on this build is new. The whistle is not a constant thing only when I am adjusting the throttle stop to get my IAC steps set. As soon as I get it within the sweet spot, the whistle starts. I pulled the unit apart and I do have play in the shaft looks like some wear, on the shaft itself as well.

Brand? I don't have that answer, they are 231's according to Witchhunter, who cleaned tested and gave a big thumbs up to. Working perfectly with a great spray pattern.

Re: WTF, 20:1 on the WBO2 gauge and exhaust so rich your eyes tear.

So I think I found the problem. Can't verify till this weekend.

When I installed the BB TBI unit, I matched the wiring color for color. After having pulled off the TBI base I noticed that the IAC was fully open. I believe this explains my conditions. I had never noticed the threads that state the BB TBI wiring was the same colors, but that the signal paths had been changed. Great job GM.

1 step closer.

BB unit installed with a new VE table.

Time for some fine tuning.
