MSD Ignition Setup

I'm thinking about getting the 40 dollar coil from summit, but recently about 3 months ago i replaced my wires, plugs dist and rotor and all. Is it safe to just bolt ont he coil, (runnin AC delco Plugs, not rapidfire's) and leave the gap at .035. Or go with the new plugs wires, rotor and dist., and open the gap more to say .045?

shouldnt need to change anything....unless you get a really powerful coil it should affect anything...if you talking about one of the MSD coils that fit your stock setup itll be fine..

The only annoying thing about the MSD coil I got was that the bracket (which was riveted on to the stock coil... grr) hit the glue that attacked the coil to its housing, so we had to grind down the bracket.

Its still only about a 30 min job, less if you know how to drill rivets out which my dad had to show me.

What I did was take a flat head screw driver and I took the whole coil and bracket out and I just banged on the flat peice of those rivets until I broke the flat part clean off and just wiggled the leftover rod. I didn't really care since MSD gives u screws and washers to replace the stock rivets that GM puts in there.

Install coil, really just a bolt in part. You don't need to gap the plugs but it wouldn't hurt to give it a little more gap. More gap the better the burn as long as the coil has a high enough voltage to jump gap.

i'll probably take them out and re gap the. Chuck!, I've put a coil in before and its simple to get the bracket off. I used a chisel and hit the flanged edge off, then took a smalled one and drove it out.

Is replacing the coil with the one MSD sells really worth it for a car which is almost stock (just exhaust, pullies etc)? And the age old question did you feel any difference by just replacing the Coil or is the real gain really only going to be realized once an entire system such as a 6AL is installed?

Any ideas??

No, I mean the glue that attaches the plastic coil housing to the metal ... frame I guess. We had to grind the middle of the bracket so that the giant glob of glue wouldnt hit the bracket. We (pops and I) just drilled the rivets out, simple task.

The coil seemed to make the car run smoother. I wasnt lookin for a gain or anything, but it idled much nicer.
