What camshaft is recommended.

Hi guys I have a sbc 350 that came out of a 87 r10 originally tbi but converted to carburetor. It has 14102193 stock heads and flat head piston other than that no modifications. It’s installed in a 79 trans am with 3.73 gears and has a 700r4 tranny with a stage 2 shift kit a 2300-2500 stall. Looking for a camshaft that would give me more low end torque and possibly have a rough noise any recommendations.

Re: What camshaft is recommended.

"Low-end torque" camshafts tend to be very smooth.

Why would you WANT the engine to run bad at idle? Who are you impressing?

Ground a couple of plug-wires at "Cruise Night" instead.

For more low-end torque, look at an RV cam; most cam manufacturers sell such grinds.

BTW, any cam with enough overlap to produce a choppy idle will pretty much kill low end, especially in a 3400-pound F-body.

As an aside, I'd think a car with a factory cam, 700R4 and 3.73 gearing would already have plenty of low-end punch if the engine was healthy and properly tuned.

Re: What camshaft is recommended.

If you want something with a rough idle that will still work with a lower compression engine, stock heads and stock torque converter the cam grind is commonly available.
Crane sells it as grind 274H06 and there are numerous other variations from almost every other cam grinder.

They all spec out around
274/274 @ .004
270/270 @ .006
224/224 @ .050
.450/.450" lift
106 LSA, 102 ICL

Because of the early intake valve closing it will have decent low-end torque as well despite the choppy idle. The swirl port heads will also run best without a duration/lift split due the the intake and exhaust flow number being much closer together than most small block heads..

All 3 of these are variations of this cam.
