Re: HIGH IDLE 1700+ RPM 92 Camaro 5.0L TBI Automatic
Oh, I was just looking at "trusty" Google, so there's that. lol Because I've messed with so many things like the idle set screw, new ECM, and now possibly trying to adjust the timing, I'm not even sure where I should start. Should I focus on one thing and then move to the next or do the idle set screw in combination with timing, because if one of them is off, it's not going to work. But how do I know when both are where they're supposed to be, because if I mess with one, doesn't it affect the other? Like a cat chasing a tail.

Yeah you’re right, my suggestions are foolish. Great luck

Oh no, not at all, and I do appreciate all your help! But I just feel like I'm out of my realm here, and if I mess with one thing I'm going to mess up things overall even more at this point. I'm so close that it's just so frustrating. Just don't know what to do at this point, but I can't have the car keep stalling on me. (Sigh)

It's 0 degrees base timing with the engine warmed up to full operating temperature with the EST disconnected. The timing specifications are located on the under hood label and in the official GM factory service manual for a 1992 Camaro.

Do you have a timing light?
Do you have a tachometer? Not the gauge in the dash of your Camaro. Some timing lights also have a tachometer built in.

Re: HIGH IDLE 1700+ RPM 92 Camaro 5.0L TBI Automatic
I have an aftermarket hood with a 4" hood scoop, so the manufacturer's label is gone. I have a timing gun, but not with a tachometer. From what I understand, 0 is in the middle of the big V notch. So I'll start the car, let it warm up to 220 degrees, and unplug the EST bypass and try to set the timing to 0. I think right now it's at like 9 degrees advanced.
I think my idle set screw is probably not in the right spot anymore so it probably needs to be adjusted as well, but do I set the timing first and then adjust the idle set screw adjustment? Or the other way around?
I guess I offended the other guy (Tuned Performance). That wasn't my intention. I truly appreciate everyone's help on this project, but I just felt that since I don't have a tachometer or possibly other tools I may need for the timing, it may be easier to just get the car to someone who has the proper tools to make the adjustments.
Obviously, I'd rather solve this issue myself.

Is there an easy way to clean off the timing tab that has the degree increments on it, without taking the water pump off? Hope so because it sits right behind it.
Re: HIGH IDLE 1700+ RPM 92 Camaro 5.0L TBI Automatic
I am doing the base timing now, and I have he EST bypass unplugged, engine up to operating temperature, and distributor loosened to where I can adjust it. My timing gun is showing me the notch is right in the middle of the big "V" which I think is 0, after adjusting. It's idling in park at around 800-900 RPMs according to my dash gauge. If I try to go any lower the idle starts to pulsate - low and high, repeatedly. So it seems that, where it is now, it's not pulsating but staying steady at around the 800-900 RPMs. Should I tighten the distributor down here at 0, and then try to use the throttle adjustment screw to try and bring the idle down to 500 in park?
Re: HIGH IDLE 1700+ RPM 92 Camaro 5.0L TBI Automatic
I think I might have it dialed in good enough - no real surging to speak of. Timing is set to 0 or maybe just 1 degree TDBC. Took it for a couple of laps.....idles in park at around 700-750, and in drive it drops down to about 600-650. So I might not even mess with the idle set screw - it might be good enough where it is. The only thing I can think about the timing issue is because the hyper-tech prom chip was in place of a stock chip. Someone may have put the timing in advance to match the chip. Who knows. But it seems to be running decent at around 0 or 1 degree.
So mechanically, I might have this thing ready to go finally. I just need to make sure my AC system can hold a charge. And do a few other little things like replace the rear hatch hinges.
Thanks to all who helped me! I may be on here with more questions - it sort of became an everything thread, but at least I got it running now thanks to all of you guys' help!
