Swapped in 350, but kept my 305 TBI on it.....do i need to swap to TPI?

I swapped in a Goodwrench crate motor (rated at 220 HP stock) and put my LO3 TBI setup on it. I'm pretty sure the TBI is holding me back (not because it's TBI, calm down TBI guys) but because of the 305 computer......As far as mods for HP, I have an open element, K&N filter, Headers, no cat, flowmaster, hypertech chip, TB throttle bore removed, crank underdrive pulley, MSD wires, and lots of cooling mods, and on the gtech i only have 230 HP.....and I know all those mods are worth more than 10HP over the motors 220HP stock rating.....this is why i think the TBI is holding me back. do i need to swap TPI onto it, or do I have any other options? DON'T WANNA GO CARB.

First, make sure you swap to 350 injectors instead of your 305 injectors, this, as well as a 350 knock sensor are a must when making that swap! It may be running lean, or detecting false spark knock if you didn't do these two things, that would explain the loss of power. Doesn't a G-tech measure rear-wheel power? If so, then 230hp on the g-tech s about 265 at the crank. You could also either upgrade to the Holley TBI and manifold, or one from www.turbocity.com. If you keep your stock TBI, use 1989 350 truck injectors, a turbocity adjustable pressure regulator if necessary, and use the edelbrock performer TBI intake manifold. You should be able to retain the stock CPU and prom with no problem, but a custom chip may help if the person programming it knows your exact set up, future and current mods, and they are any good at it.

Thats one of your problems.

You can swap in a L05 chip (350 tbi) from a caprice or something (although I think those had solid lifter cams, should still be ok though) which should help, but injectors and a knock sensor will be great like tbiworks said. If you dont have money for injectors right now, upping your fuel pressure should hold you over until you get some more cash.

For the $500 you'll spend for a tpi setup and fuel pump you could get

$120 Edelbrock performer RPM tbi manifold
$40 get it bored from 1 11/16" to 2"
$80 Holley 670 cfm tb without injector pod
$170 2 new GM injectors
$30 LT1 cam which will swap right in. you could use a more agressive cam, but we're looking to save a little money

Then drill / tap the Holley tb to accept the GM injector pod and I imagine you're looking at high 13s if tuned correctly.

Of course the TPI setup offers certain benefits that tbi wont offer like the ability to easily switch to different tuned port setups, but I dont know how far you want to go with this setup.

Chuck, no need for any drill and tap for the holley to accept the GM injector pod! Brian Felts, myself, and I believe NJSpeeder are all proof.
As for teh caprice 350 eprom, that's the best choice considering the engine you swapped in. It's not going to be great but it's going to be 95% better than using the 305 eprom. Usually you want to start with an eprom that was in a vehicle of similar weight and had an engine with same bore/stroke ratio. The ANLU eprom is definatly where ALL 350 TBI f-body's should be starting with.
The GM goodwrench engine was rated at like 250hp at crank I thought! I also don't think the Lo5 cop caprice had solid lift, pretty sure it was exactly the same as the Lo3, hyd.
Either contact me off the board about obtaining an ANLU caprice eprom or call up some local dealers. I doubt you'll find one though so....
Anyways, definatly play with the fuel pressure and get yourself some GM 350 injectors!!! Don't run the 305 injectors unless you have the fuel pressure up AND a custom eprom.

Yea, it measures rear wheel, my rearwheel was like 184.....i just calculated it out to 230 and gave you that amount.

You're right JPREVOST....the GM base 350 is rated at 250 HP.......i shoulda mentioned which crate motor I got.....the 9C1 Caprice police replacement. And yes it's a hydraulic roller. I've been considering getting a chip from a caprice 350, but I didn't know if it would work? will it? i can just pop it in place of my hypertech chip and it will work fine? I have an automatic, and the 9C1s were all automatics i'm sure....so that wouldn't be a problem.

The chip will work as long as it's from an '89 caprice. I think I've read on here that it's $55 from GM. I don't know where they got it for that, maybe www.gmpartsdirect.com or just their local dealer.
