Yeah, carbs work, but notice in the 60's they invented the 350. Good for them. Still used carb till early 80's. Notice that during the 70's they made a 350 with less power than the Lg4 305. 145hp wow. Talk about a disapointment.
A carb is awesome if you don't mind changing jets depending on weather conditions. I actually like carbs because it's a more hands on operation. I just wouldn't even think about it for a daily driver. A carb requires maintenance and TBI is a plug in and forget piece.
No real way to make a loppy idle unless you run a mechanical dissy and set the timing pretty low. This isn't a good idea but it will give you the effect of a larger cam. This is the worst option because it fouls plugs and stinks.
Loppy idles usually have an overlap under 110 and lots of duration. Lift doesn't matter. With EFI you need to use high lift and roller cams with faster valve velocity to get hp. The good old days were fun but don't expect a TBI 305 to sound anything like the equal intake/exhaust duration and lift cams of the 60's. Call up crane cams or post on the general tech board if you want more information and more depth.
