cat problems....

im tired of my car being so quiet... i bought the muffler that is supposed to be loud and it still isn't.... i have the same muffler on my other car and its really loud, so i've decided it must be the cat... btw the car is a 91 camaro rs.... 305tbi so:

what are the upsides and downsides to removing the cat completely.... what about the sensor and stuff in there???

what about gutting the cat and puting a pipe through it??? would this be any better....

how much should i look for my local shop to charge for this??? thanks

Its illegal, no shop in there right mind will do it, and if they do there not a shop who should be serviceing cars, you will find the sound you want and performance with a free flow cat, my buddy gutted his cat and it sounded and ran like S**t, sorry but that the truth of the situation, i know most people believe it works, the only thing that would be the best if any gutting is taken place would be to put a pipe through it , remember cat's serve to purposes one to convert biproducts of spent fuel to a not so toxic air as well as keep pressure on your valve,, now i know we really dont worry about pollution, but when you car becomes a gas guzzler and sounds like a gurgling garbage can, you'll wish you hadnt gutted your cat.

P.S. This is totally my opinion, just giving some useful info

Ok, so, what cat would you recommend... I'm on a tight budget right now, so best performance and sound for the least cash...

also, if i do this, will i notice a performance increase or is it not that much of a change

Broom stick it

My buddy up in NY put a broom stick threw his cat, said he didnt know a power gain really, but did notice sound. I can back that up his car was loud before and now it is a little louder. I think the hollowness of the cat lets the sound bounce around for a bit

i just recently replaced my OEM cat with CatCo freeflow, it was $104 from summit handling and tax included, this was a direct fit you can buy universals for about $50 or so, now at first when i started it up i said "WOW" its not louder at all, but after about 15mins of running it and taking it around the block it sure sounds sweet, a nice deep performane growl you get from LS1's with Borla exhaust if you know what mean, my opinion freeflow is the way to go........

the best converter to use is none at all, just put in a pipe were the cat used to be. sure its illegal just don't get caught. I have a dynomax ultra flow with no cat and in sounds really good its not quite thats for sure, but its not loud enough to get a ticket. so its a good system

if you just got a muffler and still have the stock single 2.25" pipe NO WONDER ITS QUIET! You can get a 3" hooker catback for $200.

My friend found a guy in honaker that will gut cats. You shouldn't have much trouble finding a shop around here that will do it. I'd suggest you do it yourself though. It's a hands on learning expirence and it's cheaper that way

shops will do it you just gotta find the right one. i had a local shop make a "test" pipe for $15. guy knew exactly what i was talking about and had it made in no time. but you are going to want to put 3" pipe on there if you want it to be louder

when i get the money should i go with a 3'' exhaust? is it needed on a lo3? i THINK they replaced my pipe from the cat back with 2 1/2''...im not positive tho im about to put on headers and id hate to waste the flowmaster and the brand new pipe i paid 200$ for both so why get rid of it?? i was thinking about either getting a high flow cat without the air tube since i want have any emmissions crap except the cat right now...all you have to do here to get a shop to put a pipe in without a cat is to roll in without a cat and they will put a pipe in for you
