closed and open loop question
I am failing CA emissions so i finally decided to have my sensors checked out. First i found out that the metal pipe going from the smog pump to the diverter valve was really loose and i had a fat leak which probably explains why my cat died so fast and why i was getting a code 32 in overdrive (must have forgotten to tighten it down after installing my headers) . He also said that my car was not going into closed loop. after getting my new catco welded on, i came back home and started to search the boards about open and closed loop (I LOVE THIRDGEN.ORG). I found out that you can check for open and closed loop using the ALDL. So just a few minutes ago i went out to do this. I found that my car does go into closed loop (slow blinking) but everyonce in a while the SES light will start to blink fast again (open loop) for about 2-3 seconds, and then blink slow again for about 10 seconds, repeating this over and over (though not the same everytime). Is this normal, also, could this be a result of my car being idle while testing, because i heard that if it is idel for a while, it will go back into open loop, or is this just the accuracy of the diagnostic mode. THANK YOU FOR ANY RESPONSES. I might actually be able to pass smog soon!!!!! HOPEFULLY.

Did anyone mess with the O2 sensor or wire harness when doing your exhaust? That's the first place I'd look for a not-going-into-closed-loop problem.

well, according to the diagnostic test, it does go to closed loop, but seems like every once in a while it goes in and out of closed loop.

Sounds like you are bouncing in and out of open and closed loop for sure. Try putting a heated O2 on there since you have headers. If you are tuning as well, a narrow band O2 is not what you want to use anyway, go wide band.

Re: closed and open loop question
Why does everyone freak out when someone answers an old thread? Who really cares?
1.) When you point out that someone has answered an old thread, guess what: you're answering an old thread too.
2.) The cars are the same, the issues are the same: most of this stuff is still pertinent and are issues still seen today in the 21st century, which is why people are answering them. Dusting it off & bringing it to the top is good.
3.) If it's an issue with bandwidth, or some other such nonsense, then if it's really a concern then the moderators should just lock down all threads older than, say, 1 year old. And the only person who should be concerned with this (if it's really an issue) is the person who owns the website.
4.) What's better: answering an existing thread for an issue you or others may be facing, or starting a new thread about the exact same topic?
