High Mileage engine Question within

My motor has about 144kmiles on er'. Runs pretty good. I'm thinkin about puttin a cam in er'. It's a 350. I'm just wonderin if this is a good idea or not such a good idea plus a few other bolt ons like headers, intake. How can you check the condition of your engine? She runs pretty good though. Give me some advice. Later.

you can start by thinking about how much oil it burns...it its more than about a quart every 3000 miles, dont go for anything. listen to the engine to see if lifters are going (dont confuse that with injectors. do a compression check to see how all the cylinders measure up. but anyway, with that many miles itd be best to either rebuild or get a crate. before performance parts can be added on, the rest of the motor has to be strong enough to support it. hope this helps a little

I have headers, runners, and converted to a 6 speed. Mine has 214K on it. Still runs good, uses no oil.

If it seems strong, it probably is... And besides, with that many miles on your cam, the lobes are probably worn down- a stock cam might bring back some power! When I rebuild my motor, I'm going to check the lift at the pushrods- I think 230,000+ miles has worn my cam down to nothing.

not too much more effort to pull the engine while you have the exhaust manifolds & intake off anyways. pulling the engine from the bay would give a lot more clearance for camshaft swap too.

While you have the engine out anyways, check the internal clearances. May well have ridges on the cylinder walls, worn valve guides, worn rings, bearings, oil pump, etc. At the bare minimum, replace all the rubber seals in the engine.
