Question about "Installed Height" of valvesprings.........
So if my vortec heads have a stock installed height of 1.750.......does that mean i MUST get an aftermarket spring with a 1.750 installed height as well?? Or can I get the more common 1.700 and use offset retainers or shims? Thanx Also.........can I use ANY brand valvespring that works to .510 lift if I have a Comp Extreme cam even though they say to use their specific brand?

Chris,
The key factors are pressure at lift/seat pressure (spring rate), and coil bind height. The installed height is not a big issue if the seat pressure is adequate and the spring can tolerate the lift as installed.
The often quoted installed height of 1.710" is a guide for a completely stock setup. Isn't it odd that other engines have installed heights of 2.40" or more and run just fine? Study the geometry and you'll be able to determine what is appropriate for your engine.
