Auto Shifting
Guys I just want to make sure of something. When shifting in a auto w/ overdrive. Overdrive has the box, and plain old drive has just the D. And D is gear 1, 2, 3 and Overdriver is 4th right. Overdrive also is suppose to save gas, so if I always drive in overdrive I wont have and tranny problems right.

when you are in drive all it dose is lock out overdrive, thats is if your driving on a road that has a speed limit (what's that???) of say 35 your sposted to keep it in D so the tranny isent shifting back and fourth and your converter isent locking and unlocking. bacically if your not having a problem with it going back and fourth between gears just leav it in OD, I alawas did and never had a problem (til I swiched to a manual, now my racing clutch keeps blowing my slave cylenders out, damn pain in the *** cheap GM slave cylenders that cost $150)

3 spd / 4 spd overdrive
My girlfriend has a Celica GT with push button, on the fly Overdrive selection. Is the purpose of something like that performance oriented?
If you've got a 3 spd auto vs a 4 spd auto, same car otherwise, which one will win? It's like, the 4 spd will probably pull a little longer (overall time), and it won't top out on its gears, but on the other hand, a 3 spd is already pulling 1:1 while the 4 spd is still clunking through the gears...
Just a thought, wonderin if anyone has the solution.

For around town sometimes it would be best for the tranny to leave it in D, if the it is shifting in and out of OD due to low speeds.

Just a side note, a 95 Supra TT Auto will only do 141mph in Drive.
Click the O/D on and you can go faster.
I was able to hit 155mph a few times before I ran out of road AND the car was still pulling hard.

My goal is 200+ in my 86 Trans Am, I'll get there eventually.

*pictures coyote strapping a rocket to his back*
maybe more a hypothetical..
Certainly not related to the original 3spd vs overdrive,
but Zepher, do you really feel that you'll pull 200+ with all that extra sound-system weight?
One of the most ridiculous parts about Fast and the Furious (other than the makes/models of cars?
) was all those guys racing with under-chassis neons and a set of 12s...
or is it not enough to make a significant difference?

My sound system isn't that much, I've got one 12" JL 12W6 in a small box and 2 small amps in a small amprack and my JVC headunit.
For a top speed run, weight isn't the main concern, it is drag coefficient, lots of horsepower, and gearing.

You are correct maverick544 and you can almost always just put 'er in OD and drive. I downshift to Drive when going down long hills (especially my local speed trap) or when I'm driving in the mountains.
