Scrappage Bill Defeated!!!! WOO HOOO!!

This may be old news to all of you, but I just went to www.summitracing.com and saw their headline that the bill the feds were trying to pass that would have forced all vehicles over 20 years old to be salvaged HAS BEEN DEFEATED!!!! (Me dancing) :lala:

This may not seem like a big deal to all of us (Ex. I have a 92 Camaro) because not all of us have cars that old. But had this bill been passed, 1982 Camaros would have been the first on the list. Not good. I would have been counting the days, even minutes, on how long I had 'til my car was crunched.

I have an '83 1/2 ton Chevy that would have become worthless the day the bill would have passed. As a matter of fact, I can't imagine how much that would effect the resale value of all used cars. A 2002 35th Anniversary Camaro SS would be worth about $10K the day you drove it off the new car lot if that bill would have gone into effect. That would suck major dork!!!

I know someday this bill will be passed. It's bound to happen. And bless my soul, I'll cry & cry & cry the day it does. Then I'll invest in stocks of Kleenex brand tissues due to all the people who will be crying with me. At least one company will benefit.

OK. I'm done rejoicing for now. Hopefully I'll be able to 'til the day I die.

Well let's see. Why would a car ,that right now has the potential to become a classic, be worth anything if it were destined to be sitting in a scrap pile in 20 yrs? That's called common sense.

Would you buy stock in a company that EVERYONE knew was going to be out of business in 20 yrs?

FYI, That's were I've been.

BTW, why is it called 'common sense' when it doesn't seem to be very common?

Uh, because it's a nice car? I doubt we'll see a classic 2002 Lexus, and they seem to sell for quite a bit. I wouldn't buy (and didn't buy) an f-body for it's value in 10-20-30 years, I bought it because I wanted it.

It wouldn't be scrapped, that's only if the cars are laying around in people's yard's lookin like crap. The government couldn't come and take your 35th Ann. SS just cause it was 20 yrs old. That law only pertained to freeing up clutter and junk. Not cars that are just old.

Yes, but all those scrap cars that we pull parts off of would be gone. Wasn't this also the bill that would enable the government to give you an "incentive" to buy a new car, while taking your old one? I remember reading something about that reciently. The idea is to improve emissions standards by getting rid of the older cars that produce more emissions.

But I was mainly referring to the original poster saying buying a new SS would be pointless since in 20 yrs it would be scrapped.
I understand about the pulling parts off of old cars part.

I hope the "common sense" you refer to isn't common, since it really isn't very sensible. There is no way a car that you just bought could depreciate such a huge amount in so little time. I don't think gm will go out of business in 20 years either.

Thank you Pablo. I'm glad to see that some people can read into stuff more than simply what it says.
