Head Gaskets: 305 + Vette Heads

Hey All,

I'm gearing up for swapping a pair of Vette AL heads on my 305 and I'd like to get opinions on head gaskets. My plan is to use GM P/N 12557236 which should be the gaskets used on the ZZ4 crate motors with these heads. I realize that my car originally came with steel shims and that I might lose a couple of tenths of a point on my CR. Reasoning for not going with the steel shims is for piece of mind against leaks on a 93k mile motor (my stockers appear that they may have been leaking slightly).

Any thoughts either way on the subject?

Forget about the steel shims. It sounds like a good idea to go with because of possible leaks.

I hope you have the TPI base plate bolt pattern all sorted out.

iroc22,

I found another composition GM gasket (10105117) which is about .028" compressed and is closer in thickness to the original shims. I'll probably go with that one instead. Yep, I've got an '85 TPI base all ready to go...

Thanks for the heads up.

The head gaskets I used for vette heads on a 305 were Ferrera's [spelling]. They had the best combo of thickness and bore size that I could find .035 and 4.060.

I'm using GM p#10185054 with my set-up.
