Key Switch not turning back to off!!!
Key Switch not turning back to off!!!
Hey
I am taking my car to a locksmith who was a mechanic on friday, but if he can't help I have to bring it to the chevy dealership.
My key switch is busted and I can't turn my car off. To turn it off I just unplug the distributor and then unhook the battery to shut off the fan.
What do you guys think?

if you have a auto-trans there is a switch that doesnt let you turn the key to the lock position unless your in park. many times it moves to where the switch isnt able to engage while in park, thus the key cannot come out. check this, i would bet on it
Does the radio and other accesories stay on too?
Don't know if its the same piece or not, but we just fixed a beretta that did the same thing. Thought it was the ignition lock cylinder, but it turned out to be the piece that connected the lock cylinder and the rod that goes through the ignition switch on the coloumn.
It would let the car start but wouldn't turn back off. Part cost $28 at a GM dealer.
Good luck

EXACTLY
You hit it. That's what people have been telling me. I can start it but not turn it off. The bad thing is that I don't have the key for the steering column to open it up...the car was broken into and the steering column was replaced by a boneyard F-bird
