I FAILED inspection... HELP ME!!!
I FAILED inspection... HELP ME!!!
I failed CO with a reading of 1.47 with low idle, and the limit was 1.20

On the third page of the print out it says "Explain Rejection Fully: low idle speed to high"
now here is the deal, my Cat is gutted. and has a straight pipe going through it. and i have the AIR pipe connected to it, but i think there is a leak on the air hose, is it most likley the cat causing my problems?? could it be that i need to secure the AIR hose better? is there anything else i can do to better tune the engine so i might pass?? how close am i with the cat not working judging by those readings???
also, timing is pretty far advanced, 93 octane with emmisions pass stuff in the tank. nice and cold today

If that's all you missed it by, if you didnt' before, drive the car around for about 20 mins before testing, it helps clean the engine out and helped lower my readings.
well the guy working the inspection redid it about 4 diff times.. failed CO everyone of those times... i also forgot to add that the temp guage didn't get past 180*. would it pass better with a 195* therm or something blocking part of the radiator to get the engine warmer?
yeah, I think swapping to a hotter thermo may help out, the hotter the engine, the more gas is burned=less pollutants, that is why new cars runs on the brink of overheating.
Another thing you may want to try is shooting a couple gallons of alcohol(not beer or vodka, but pure racing alcohol) into a full tank of gas. Alcohol burns super clean. even putting in a can of "turbo 108 octane boost" may help as that is primarly alcohol.

Don't retard your timing - it'll only get worse. The down-side of alcohol is that it burns cooler, so you may need to counteract that by disconnecting the fan or controlling it manually to get the head temperature higher.
If you have an AFPR, try lowering the pressure temporarily to lean it out more. You could even remove a vacuum hose in a discrete location to introduce more idle air, but it may set a code on a MAF car.

CO was the only thing I had trouble passing after my engine got TPI (w/ the carb, HC was trouble)
A good factory cat helped me fly through inspection, but mine is bolt in so it's a little less hassle to R&R for special occasions

alright, i did some research, your right i do need ethanol.. where can i get SOME!!! and how much should i put in? like how much of those fuel dryer bottles are actualy ethanol??
and as far as the cat goes. Im going to eventualy put one on when i find all my exhaust leaks and save up some $$ fixing more important stuff.. But we have new emissions laws going into effect may 1st, so i have to get it passes with the older ones..

An expensive way to buy ethanol is to visit your local liquor store and purchase Everclear by the gallon.
A cheaper way is to visit your local gas station that sells gasohol (10% ethanol).
Another way is to visit a paint or hardware store and purchase denatured alcohol in gallon cans. It is generally 90% ethanol with 10% methanol added to render it useless for human consumption (drinking it can cause permanent blindness). Methanol is not the best type of alcohol to use in your car, since it can be corrosive to bronze alloys (brass and stuff). In small concentrations, it can be O.K. DeMert's Heet fuel line antifreeze is 100% methanol, so it isn't completely unsafe, just a poorer choice than ethanol.

As close as you were on HC, I'd just go with no more than two 12-16 ounce bottles to a full tank of gas.
