I watched a friend of mine rebuild the one on our work truck in like 5 minutes. There is a pin you drive out that holds the bottom gear on (if I remember correctly). That allows the inner shaft to come out and then you can get to the pick-ups inside. Looked pretty simple to do. I'd imagine a SBC repair book from an autoparts detailer would have good pics/explaninations.
If there is radial play in the shaft, you should remove the old sleeves and install new bearings. There used to be a kit offered by Mr. Gasket or Moroso that included bushings, an 'O' ring, a gasket, a gear, and a roll pin. I haven't seen (nor looked for) them for a while.

ok, well i pulled the cap/coil and rotor off it today and took a look
i think it just needs a new cap, only because one terminal is corroded
now how to i go about installing this into my LG4 that is now non-CC
it seems that all the electronics from the module to the coil are self contained and all i need to do is run a positive and a negative to the respective connector on the distibutor
am i correct??
also how do i put in it so that it is in correct.........
i also assume i have to run a hose from a vacuum port on the carb to the advance unit on the distrib........
sorry for all the dumb questions, but they didnt teach me this stuff in school cuz no cars use distributors anymore

'91,
Don't feel bad. When I got my training, no one was teaching anything about solenoids and starters, since all cars still had hand cranks and magnetos. But between the two of us, I think we can figure it out.
If the distributor is truly an non-CC type (four-wire) you should be able to connect a positive switched ignition source to the BAT terminal and fround the coil terminal. The other connections are the TACH terminal and coil primary positive connection. Connect a ported vacuum line to the advance mechanism, and you should be set.
The distributor still has a reluctor and pickup coil in the base, and now would be a good time to inspect and test them, before it is installed.
