External difference between 305 and 350

How can you tell the dif. between 305 and 350 externally???i have someone with an iroc that orig. came with 305, but they were sold the car as a 350 car, and now im interested in it. It is the lady's sons old car. she doesnt know for sure, but was told by a few people its a 350. dont want to over pay for a 305 car. also, if anyone knows of a decent 350 iroc for sale, please let me know. me and my 10 yo daughter are dying for a new toy.
thanks
Bob

the olny way to tell a 350 from a 305 externaly is the harmonic balancer. the 305s is alot skinnier than the 350s. i dont know exact me4asurement but i know that the 305s is alot thinner than a 350s. thats the only way i know without pullin a head.

You'll need the casting number at the back fo the engine. Then go here to look it up

The balancer method is not a good idea. Almost all of the later engines (305 or 350) used the same balancer.

Get the numbers off the block, thats the sure way to know.

Spartyon,

Swearing when working on cars is like the "fitzall" tool in the chest. Sometimes you just need to get that tool out and use it. I think Mitsubishi mechanics use it a lot more, though.

I dont know how u would be able to see the casting # with the motor in the car, its rite against the fire wall and has big wireing harness on it.

You could also pop off a valve cover and get the # of the heads, athough it would only say if the heads were 350s or not, but its still worth a shot.
