hardend pushrods or not

hardend pushrods or not

I have a 89 tpi 305 with world s/r torquer 305 heads a comp cam 262hr-12 cam and crane cams 1.5 narrow body self aligning roller rockers and I was wondering if I needed hardend push rods or not?

If you're not using push rod guide plates, they aren't absolutely necessary.

Short anser: Vader's right.

SR/Torquers are like stock heads. There'a an oval-shaped hole drilled/machined into the head that the pushrod passes through that also provides lateral control on the pushrod. Cast iron will not wear down a steel pushrod (hardened or not).

If, however, you have clamped some steel guide plates under the S/R's screw-in rocker arms studs, then you should either:

1. Remove them. You only want one device to center the pushrods, never two, that could "fight" against eachother.
2. Install hardened pushrods.

Steel guideplates will literally eat throught non-hardened pushrods in only a few thousand miles.
