temp gauge..is it just me???
Hi all, when i changed my plugs, the temp. gauge quit working,i've checked it and seems loose, but last time i drove it,it seemed to work, today, the gauge worked for a while, then i looked down and the needle dropped down to the beginning,am i missing something on the connection???it just seems to slide on the sensor,it doesn't lock down or anything??still don't think i fixed the original fan problem either,is it just me...or am i missing something???

the sensor should just have a male blade connector on it and the connector on the wire is a female blade connector, if it's loose then squeeze the female part down a bit so it stays on. if it still doesnt work, touch the wire to the body of the car, the needle should peg at max because there is no resistance. if it doesn't then your gage is probably broken. if it does and gage wont work then your sender could be bad.
you can test it with an ohm meter. place one electrode on the sender's connector and ground the other near the sender somewhere. at 100deg F it should be about 1500ohms, at 260 i think about 55ohms

sensor
are you talking about the sensor on the water neck? i've heard others saying it on the block some where... i tested the gauge and it works fine, so its something between there and the motor

mine happens to be be in one of the heads. since your gage works then i'm assuming it's your sender that's bad. find out the resistance values it's supposed to read and check it or just buy a new one, mine was $7

I would but i don't even know where the thing is... you have any idea what color wire(s) would be going to it? and how do you get it if its on one of the heads?

Temp gauge sender is between the #1 and #3 spark plugs. Fan switch is between the #6 and #8 spark plugs. Both of those have dark green wires. The ECM's temp sender is in the water outlet and has a yellow and a black wire.

Thanx for all the info...
but this thing is just messing with my small brain, last 3 trips to town ,the gauge has been working, tonite in heavy traffic i watched as it crept up right past the 220 mark, then i noticed the gauges and the voltmeter kinda flickered, and watched the temp come down to the 220 mark,i thought,ALRIGHT fans came on,but can't get out of car to pop hood to check,so next light,up right past 220 again, same flicker and back to 220,once thru traffic came down to mid mark,@160??and stayed there until i got in driveway, then the temp gauge went to the bottom???it's just messing with me,weird stuff happen to ya'll too??????

rage, the fire is from the backfiring through the carb. at that point we had just put the distributor in and were setting timing, it was way off lol.
