Harmonic Balancer no good??

Hey guys I've got this rattle somewhere's at the front of the motor at idle and deacceleration in neutral( me under the hood using my hand to rev it up).. I thought it might be my power steering pump as the pulley is bent,, so I took the belt off and it still does it,,, now Im thinking maybe its the harmonic balancer?? do they make these rattles when they're shot?? I've got gear drive timing also.....

Balancers make scraping noises when they are bad and they rub on the timing cover.

A rattle... its possible its the gear drive. I've heard of the Pete Jackson ones having the link bar come apart and make noise. What kind do you have?

Transmission: 700r4 (for now)
When my balancer loosened up on me, it made all kinds of rattles knocks and grinds...make sure it is tight.

Oh yeah,,,,, and would it be a good idea to start the car without the balancer for like 10 seconds so that way I can really narrow it down???? or is that a NO NO ????

Shouldnt hurt anything. Might splash a little oil out of there, but should be otherwise ok.

The balancer if it slips, it usually heads towards the block and sometimes its easy to see that it has moved. It will also wobble when the engine is running.
