Gas tank leak -need opinions
Gas tank leak -need opinions
Hello,
After I got home from filling my car today I noticed gas was running down from the top (above filler tube) of my gas tank onto the ground. Is there some kind on a vent up there that opened up under extreme pressure? The first thing I'm going to do is get a new regular gas cap. I've had a locking one for a while and it doesn't seem to vent well. There's always a lot of pressure when I open it.
thanks guys
Craig

My guess is that a little gushed out as the pump kicked off. If you have a leak in the filler tube, the tank won't build pressure--you won't notice 'the pressure' when you remove the cap.
Thanks for your reponse. Where do you think it came out from though? Its not coming from the filler tube but somewhere above it. Whats on the top of the gas tank? Is that where the pump is? Mabe a seal is gone?
thanks
thanks
F-bodies are pretty notorious for having leaky gas tanks at the joint between the tank and the filler neck. I had a leak and it actually caused by car to fail the VET test because the gas fumes gut sucked into the sniffer inlet. I had to replace my tank to get my car to pass the emissions test.

My car did this when I got it.. Theres a large o-ring on the top. Mine puckered out in one spot leaking gas right on top of the exhaust
Luckily no fires ever occured, and I never filled it all the way until I got it fixed.
There is a vent, but not on top, it runs down and terminates before the filter on FI cars..

Do you have to pull the gas tank in order to replace it? I'm guessing you do. Are there any special gas caps that will prevent pressure build-up that I could buy for the time being?
thanks

Yeah, sorry you need to drop the tank. There's vented caps, but mine still leaked if I filled it too far.. I tried 'em. Anything to avoid dropping the tank
