Dyno...

My cars feels like it has a serious loss of power... 1992 z28 350 TPI...

I hear i should have no traction if u gun it, buti never spin from a dead stop, only by power braking, and sometimes if i make a hard turn while accelerating.

It has had a tune up, new fuel filter and such... The only things i can think of giving me a prob could be, plugs, fuel injectors, or maybe transmission?

I was thinking of going on a dyno to see how much hp i have at the wheels, this would really tell me how much power loss i have...

The only thing is, i am afriad of going on a dyno becuase i have a feeling something will blow.. like the rear end... the car is strong, only 58k on it, but can a dyno do anything to mess up the car? Cause topping out a 10 yr old car scares me, and i dont need a rear to blow, cause i dont even have enough money for my SLP headers yet....

When I helped a friend Dyno his RX7 last week, all the pulls were done in 3rd gear [it's a 5 speed] and that's how the power was determined.

If you don't have enough money for headers, going to the dyno won't help your funds much either. 1 hour of Dyno time cost $100 for us [got in 8 pulls though].

Don't waste money doing a dyno run if you can't afford headers. Change the spark plugs if you suspect them, and clean the fuel injectors if you suspect them. Your rear end won't break if it wasn't already going to.

I don't see a dyno any more damaging than gunning it or taking it to the track. And in fact I'm sure power braking is worse than a dyno. But like said dynos are pricey.

Yeah dyno's are less harmful because they are "linear accelaration.

I've never torn up any of my cars on a dyno. But I have seen somebody's new motor blow up; I guess that one wouldn't have made it doen the track the first time. That was kind of funny, the look on the guy's face.

Look at it this way, if it tears up then and there, it's less trouble than beside some road who knows how far from home or help. Odds are there is someone around who'll know what to do to fix it, and might even have the parts on hand.
