Timing questions. Again...

Ok, I keep hearing that I should set my timing to 12 - 16 intial and have 32 - 36 total advancce at about 3000. Well I have my timing at 8 initial and it still pings/knocks. So it looks like I'll be setting it lower to about 6 probably. So, if I'm setting it at 6, there's no way I'm gonna be getting 32 - 36 total advance. Right? I've been trying to get the most out of this car. I have a post on the racing board https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=111679 trying to get this straightened out. I was gonna go to the track today but I now have a tranny problem.

If it isn't one thing it's another. Just replaced the rad last week and my T-stat goes out on me Sunday. Now that's gone. This money pit is killing me.

Hmmm 6 is a little low....you should check & make sure everything else is OK with your ignition including advace springs/weights.

You shouldnt have to set it that low. Is your carb adjusted properly? I mean the mixture screws? Sorry i dont know much about Edel carbs.

Anyhow keep us updated.

Carb is set fine. I read the HEI tech article and realized I had the vacuum advance on the wrong vacuum port on the carb and also figured out how to see what my full advance is and where after reading the article about 50 times. I didn't realize that the distributor has 20 degrees advance built in so I had to add 20 + 6 to get my advance number which is 26 obviously and it came in as schedualed. I was hoping I didn't have to change the springs on that hot motor. But now I have a serious tranny problem. Fluid is getting forced out through my dipstick when I come to a stop and smoking on my headers. I have no idea why. Well anyway, my car is undrivable now till I get that figured out.

Back to the timing issue, make sure your EGR is functioning to get maximum available advance.

I have no EGR. I have the Edelbrock Vortec Performer RPM intake.
After I finally figured out how to set my timing, correctly I had no probs. Car pulls good. I didn't think it would run better on 92 octane, but it loves it. With the 87 I was at 0 BTDC initial. Was gonna go to the track yesterday and see what the difference was, but I had some stupid tranny prob that was my fault. Took about 2 seconds to fix. Oh well. I'll get to the track Wednesday. Should be in the 13's. I hope. Thanks.
