always takes 2 cranks
always takes 2 cranks
Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to why my 82 camaro (305/cfi) always takes 2 cranks to start up, it never starts on the first one and it always starts on the second, not a really big deal but kind of embarrasing =(.
thanks,
Ben

IMHO, you are dealing with a horizontal tunnel ram with a HUGE plenum, and it takes a little time for enough fuel to get into the manifold to get some to the combustion chambers.
Try letting it crank till it fires.
A friend of mine has an 83 with the CFI, and he does that "2 crank" thing also. ( he won't listen to me when I tell him to let it crank either)

ha! two cranks... i was happy if i could get my old 305 to start at all without the batt going dead. Lousy compression i guess. new 350 takes three cold.

my 90 iroc with a 305 tpi would take about 3 cranks to start and then when it did turn over it would rev to about 1200rpm then down to 700rpm and die. I would crank it over and start on the first retry. Fluctuate a few times in the low rpms and then settle down to about 900rpm. I took me a little 500 mile trip on the car and now it starts fine on the first crank. Go figure...
Maybe you could try to slow down the starting process a little. Turn the key to RUN and let the fuel pump pressurize the system for a couple of seconds before you crank the engine.
As for the hunting idle after start up, it sounds like the IAC and throttle body might benefit from a little cleaning.

I'll try that Priming trick, it will probably help out.
The Idle problem is probably due to the Timing being advanced and also I got the 2 Throttle Bodies cleaned. I threw some Injector Cleaner in a month ago, but still does the same thing.
Oh well, i'll wait till I get a Tune-Up and the proper Timing and see where i'm at then.
Thanks Merlin!
