Choosing the right car
Ok, I am definitely going to buy a third gen f-body. Now it is just finding the right one. I want either a 305/5spd or a 350/auto. Which will be easier to find? Now, how can I tell which is a 305, and which is a 350. Only by the #on the heads? And lastly, which fuel delivery system is better, TPI or carb'd? It seems most people prefer the TPI. Also what price range will these cars be in? I'm looking for one around 2k, is this feasible? Thanks

to start off any 350 car you find will be 87 and up and unless its in need of some major tlc, itll be more than 2k. A decent or even very good 305 car for 2k is reasonable, ive seen plenty of them. What you get depends on how much you are willing to work with and against. You can tell its a 350 by a few things, the vin number, the sticker on the radiator support, asking the owner. But all 350 cars came with autos and were tpi, best bet though considering anything can be swapped is check the vin or look at the rpo codes and look for l98. As for carb vs tpi, its all opinion and what you want. I think tpi is better for a daily driver and carb is better for a car you are going to mod a whole lot, and once agian youll find these from 500 bucks to near 10000, it all depends, just go out and look and have an idea what you want and what problems you can deal with

Welcome to the boards... You might want to look in the history and restoration board some. You same questions gets asked often. Alot of people asking which cars are what and there is a lot of good information on that board. Helps you out so you dont get burned by a lie the seller might be feeding you.
From what I have seen on camaro sales is for around 2K you are only going to pick up a later model RS with a 305 TBI or V6. Might be able to find an older Z that may need some tlc. My opinion is to shoot for a 90-92 RS with a 305 TBI. TBIs can be moded just like TPIs. I base my opinion on looks and the fact that the car is newer and my be less likely to be rusting and need as much replaced as an older model. Just my .02

Don't get carb, you only get the LG4/L69 cars. L69 isn't that bad. But I would go with the 350 TPI, these can achieve close to 30 mpg and have power. Like said check out the history board, and welcome.

but pertaining to the topic.... I say go with a 350.... more cubes to start off with, and if you go to sell it, it'll go faster than a 305

I was about to say the same thing, I have a 350 TPI, 700R-4 auto. trans, and 3.27 gears. I get 16 in the city, 22 on the hwy.
