good smog equipment bypass article

Anyone know where I can find a good article on removing the smog pump and all other related equipment? I checked the tech articles on here, but I didn't find what I was looking for. any suggestions?

This is not a good idea...
Clearly if your looking for something like this
your understanding of these devices is limited.

Better to look into how do these things work...

A reasonable place to start...
How to Tune and Modify Chevrolet Fuel Injection
Ben Watson
ISBN 0-7603-0422-X

Tossing your emmisions control equipment for something
other than a purpose built car indicates a less than
competent tuner roughly equivalent to a three foot
wing and a coffee can on a "*****"

I do not want to know how to tune and modify cheverolet fuel injection. My car is carbureted. The reason I was asking, is because I have heard it is restrictive to the airflow, and steals horsepower from the engine. If more horsepower isn't a purpose, what is?

urbman,
so you think that removing the smog pump, hoses, etc. will not help performance on my car? I am interested in doing this because the smog lines run into my exhaust manifold, and I was planning on getting some headers some day. Headers will be much cheaper if I get ones that don't have to work with the emissions equipment. And they will be a whole lot easier to install without all of the smog equipment in my way. If these are my plans, and I don't have to get emissions tested Do you still think I should not do this?? Thanks for your help.

Hmmm...
Roughly...
The air pump is trying to do two things

1. Supply air to the hot exhaust gasses
to allow them to burn more completely during the
enriched cold start sequence

2. Supply air to the cat to allow it to "light up" sooner

- Pulling the air pump will give you slightly less weight
- You will also pick up 1 to 2 hp by not having to drive
the pump
- Removing the additional plumbing will allow simpler access
to valve covers

My "opinion" and its just that. Is that this isn't going anywhere.
I would much rather assist you with something like getting
your car in a great state of tune or a "light" nitrous experiment
or some efficient heads/cam combo or some chassis tuning.

I understand why folks do such things...
The show and shine crowd really do artistic things with
engine compartment detail and racers are just
playing a game by class rules.

It sounds like you have a nice car I would encourage
you to be sure of what you are doing and why.

(The book is an excellent primer on emmisions and
electronic control)

I appreciate your information. Does the book by Watson contain information for all engine applications, or strictly fuel injected? As I would like to, and someday will own some cheverolet fuel injected vehicles, my current car is carbureted. From what you tell me it sounds as if removing the air pump could be a lot of work, without the expected results. Are there any negative effects associated with removing the pump? For example, not getting air to the cat, or not getting air to the hot exhaust gases as you mentioned. I would probably not perform this until I was ready to redo the exhaust COMPLETELY. Would the pump still be appropriate with these mods?

I would love to have you help me with Some heads, cam, and nitrous. But heads and nitrous are a little out of my price range, being in school, and driving on bad tires. My car has 116K on it, so I wouls not want to feed nitrous to it without rebuilding. I will surely look you up on here if the time ever comes.

Thanks again for clearing up my confusion regarding the purpose of the air pump.

Brett

Ask the library to order/borrow a copy...
Its very FI centric but the explanations on
how sensors work and what the system is trying
to get done are worth the read...

Basically running without the air pump will require
plugging the exhaust manifold and the cat inlet.

I can't visualize the 86 belt layout...
so I am not sure what you need...

If you'r pretty low buck...
There is still plenty you can accomplish while waiting
for funding...

Box your lca's
replace bushings
bearings, bushings and brakes can be done economically
